Iconic Toyota Corolla Sedan Sees Its Sales Decline In Brazil, While Hybrid And Electric Models, Like Those From BYD, Quickly Conquer The Market. In Response, Toyota Plans To Launch A More Affordable Version Of The Corolla To Win Back Consumers And Face The Growing Competition In The National Automotive Sector.
The Brazilian automotive market is undergoing profound changes in recent years. Models that were once synonymous with leadership and tradition are facing new challenges with the transformation of consumer profiles.
The Toyota Corolla, one of the best-selling sedans in the country’s history, now needs to deal with a gradual decline in sales.
If medium-sized sedans were once the national preference, today consumers are increasingly inclined to choose SUVs and more technologically advanced models.

Google will finally let you change that embarrassing Gmail address you created in your teenage years without losing any accounts, logins, or old emails: the feature is already available in the United States.

The institute that trained the greatest aerospace engineers in Brazil has just opened its first campus outside São Paulo after 75 years: ITA Ceará will have R$ 445 million, new courses in energy and systems, and classes are expected to start in 2027.
This phenomenon has directly impacted Toyota, which is already seeing a significant change in Corolla’s acceptance and is looking for ways to reverse this situation.
The Rise Of SUVs And The Decline Of The Corolla
Statistics reinforce this change. In 2024, the Corolla Cross, the SUV version of the model, outperformed sales of the traditional sedan. Over 47 thousand units were registered, compared to 37 thousand of the sedan.
This number shows how Brazilian consumers have started to value taller, sturdier vehicles with greater interior space, a trend that has also consolidated in international markets.
This decline of the sedan did not happen overnight. In 2020, 41 thousand units of the Corolla sedan were sold, but since then, the numbers have been falling year after year.
This indicates that Toyota needs to act quickly to prevent one of its biggest commercial successes from losing even more relevance.
Moreover, the SUV market in Brazil is booming, with models like Honda HR-V, Jeep Compass, and Volkswagen T-Cross dominating sales.
The Corolla Cross itself has been one of the most valued cars by consumers for combining reliability with a more modern design.
The Future Of The Corolla Sedan: Is There Still Demand?
Despite the reduction in sales volume, the Corolla sedan still has its audience.
According to News Motor, fleet operators and app drivers continue to bet on the model due to its mechanical reliability and tradition in the market.
However, to maintain this niche, Toyota understands that it needs to offer a differential to prevent these customers from migrating to other options.
The automaker’s response is a plan to make the Corolla more accessible. Toyota will launch a simpler version of the Corolla GLi, with an estimated price of R$ 129.8 thousand.
This new configuration will have some changes to reduce costs, such as the removal of leather seats and the Toyota Safety Sense system, which includes safety and partial autonomous driving assistance.
This strategy aims to reach an audience that desires a reliable sedan but does not want to pay prices close to those of more modern SUVs.
The bet is that this “basic” version can attract consumers looking for value for money and a traditional car.
The Challenge Of Competing With New Trends
Another factor affecting the Corolla’s performance is the rise of electrified and hybrid vehicles. Models like the BYD King and the BYD Seal, hybrids and electric, are winning over the audience looking for cutting-edge technology and energy efficiency.
The global trend of electrification is gaining momentum in Brazil, and Toyota needs to react to avoid losing market share to these new options.
The automaker already offers hybrid versions of the Corolla and Corolla Cross, but with the growing competition, it will need to reinvent itself to remain relevant.
Electrification will be a natural step, but prices are still an obstacle for many consumers.
How Can Toyota Save The Corolla?
For experts, with the fierce competition from SUVs and electric models, Toyota will need to balance tradition and innovation.
The bet on the simpler version of the Corolla may help maintain sedan sales, but in the long run, the automaker will need to invest even more in technology and electrification to ensure the model’s permanence in the market.
Toyota may also work on a complete redesign of the Corolla’s design and powertrain for the coming years, offering something that truly attracts consumers who are currently opting for SUVs and hybrids.
The challenge is set: to maintain the relevance of an iconic model in a market that never stops changing.

O carro melhorou a potência!
