Despite The Brand’s Strong Reputation, Consumers Report Issues With The Automatic Transmission And Suspension Of The Toyota Corolla SUV
Since its launch in Brazil in 2021, the Toyota Corolla Cross has stood out in the medium SUV market. Produced in Sorocaba (SP), the model arrived to directly compete with the Jeep Compass, the segment leader since 2016. Utilizing the TNGA platform from the Corolla sedan, the Toyota Corolla Cross offers consumers the well-known reliability and robustness of the Japanese brand. However, some owners have reported problems that compromise their experience with the vehicle, according to the website Auto Esporte.
Performance And Construction Of The SUV
The Toyota Corolla Cross uses the TNGA platform, sharing various components with the Corolla sedan, including engines and driving assistance technologies. Available with aspirated flex engines, the SUV features a 2.0 engine of up to 175 hp and a CVT automatic transmission that simulates ten gears. In the hybrid versions, the setup consists of a 1.8 engine and an electric motor, generating a combined 122 hp.
In April 2024, the model underwent an update, gaining a redesigned look, improvements in finishing and new equipment, such as the electric opening of the trunk lid in the high-end versions.

Main Complaints From Consumers About The SUV
Despite the praise for its harmonious design, good interior space, and driving dynamics, the Toyota Corolla Cross has received criticism regarding mechanical issues and finishing. The main complaints from owners include noises in the suspension and malfunction of the automatic transmission.
Reports of abnormal noises in the suspension are common among Corolla Cross owners. Alexandre, from Vitória da Conquista (BA), reported on the website Reclame Aqui that his vehicle, purchased in September 2023, began to make noises in the right front suspension after the first 5,000 km.
“This noise appears when I go over bumps and on poorly paved streets. I took the car to the dealership, but they didn’t find any problems and said the noise was a characteristic of the vehicle. I did several searches online and found that this complaint is recurring among owners of the Corolla Cross and Corolla sedan”, stated Alexandre.
Paulo Vianna, an automotive mechanic, explains that it is necessary to investigate the source of these noises. “Reports are not enough for a proper diagnosis. It is essential to check for defective components or parts with play in the suspension, which is crucial for the vehicle’s safety.”
Failures In The SUV’s Automatic Transmission
Another problem reported by owners of the Toyota Corolla Cross is the malfunction of the automatic transmission. Bruno, from São Paulo (SP), complained that his vehicle, with only 1,000 km driven, exhibited jerks when shifting from first to second gear.
“The shift is not smooth; it feels like a cart”, reported Bruno. Toyota responded that the issue is not a product or assembly defect but a characteristic of the vehicle, and performed a system reprogramming to improve performance.
Vianna notes that problems with the automatic transmission are concerning, especially in new vehicles. “Toyota is known for using robust transmissions. These reports are atypical and should be investigated carefully.”
Toyota’s Response
Toyota addressed the complaints through its press office, highlighting that the technical support area continuously diagnoses and monitors the requests received. The company is available to provide guidance on the correct functioning of components, maintenance, or necessary repairs.
“The technical support area at Toyota continuously diagnoses and monitors the requests received and provides guidance on the correct functioning of the component, maintenance, or its repair if necessary. Toyota is always available to serve its customers”, states the official note from the automaker.

A TOYOTA DEVERIA DE OFERTAR CARROS COM OPÇÕES MAIS VARIADAS DE CORES E ELEGANTES, COMO O “VERDE DA JAGUAR, DA AUDI, BMW,( COR DE VINHO PORTUGAL, VERMELHO FERRARI etc).
É ruim imaginar q o BRASILEIRO TEM Q ENGOLIR GOELA ABAIXO APENAS AS CORES Q NOS OFERTAM Q SÃO O BASICO DE TODAS AS MONTADORAS: PRETO, PRATA, CINZA, BRANCO PEROL, BRANCO NATURAL.
