Toyota Launches Brazil’s Cheapest Hybrid SUV: Yaris Cross to Be Produced in SP and Promises 30 km/l in the City
Toyota has just confirmed the launch of the flex hybrid Yaris Cross in Brazil for October 2025. The model will be produced at the Sorocaba (SP) plant and will become the first national compact SUV with flex hybrid technology, combining a combustion engine with an electric motor and e-CVT transmission. The goal is clear: to occupy a strategic space below the Corolla Cross and compete with rivals that currently dominate the entry-level electrified segment.
This move is part of a larger plan by Toyota in the country. Since 2023, the Japanese automaker has announced R$ 11 billion in investments in Brazil until 2030, focusing on electrification, local parts supply, and local production of hybrid technologies. Therefore, the Yaris Cross is a key piece in this transformation — and also a direct response to the advancement of brands like BYD, Fiat, and GWM, which have popularized hybrids in the Brazilian market.
Compact Platform Focused on Efficiency and Competitive Cost
The new SUV will be built on the DNGA platform, a variation of TNGA aimed at compact and more economical vehicles. This base is already used by models from Daihatsu, a Toyota group company that operates strongly in Asia and emerging markets. The choice of DNGA allows the brand to produce a lightweight SUV with excellent interior utilization and one of the best fuel efficiency in its class.

Fiat launches the new 2027 Toro hybrid with 48V, 176 hp, an electric motor of 15.5 hp, a 0.85 kWh battery, up to 7% fuel savings, 8% fewer emissions, and possible exemption from IPVA.
The Yaris Cross will have dimensions similar to the Hyundai Creta and VW Nivus, at about 4.31 m in length and an estimated trunk capacity of 470 liters. The generous wheelbase of 2.62 meters should ensure comfort for five occupants, while the design combines sporty lines, full LED headlights, and taillights connected by a darkened bar at the rear.
Flex Hybrid Engine Promises to Be the Most Fuel-Efficient in Brazil
The great differential of the model will be the HEV system with a 1.5 Atkinson cycle flex engine, similar to that used in the Corolla and Corolla Cross. Combined with the electric motor and the continuously variable transmission (e-CVT), the system ensures an estimated urban fuel consumption of up to 30 km/l, according to Toyota’s data for the Thai market — a figure that is expected to remain close when using ethanol in the Brazilian standard.
This level of efficiency positions the Yaris Cross among the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the country, even surpassing popular hatchbacks. In practice, the new SUV will be able to drive short distances in 100% electric mode and automatically switch between the two engines to maintain low consumption and emissions within the most stringent standards.
Estimated Price, Versions, and Market Positioning Strategy
Although Toyota has not yet released official prices, market analysts and specialized vehicles like Quatro Rodas suggest that the Yaris Cross HEV is expected to cost between R$ 140,000 and R$ 160,000, making it the most affordable hybrid from the brand in Brazil. The hybrid Corolla Cross currently starts at R$ 182,000, and the Prius was discontinued in 2022, reinforcing the need for a more affordable product with electrified technology.
Initially, two versions are expected to be offered: a conventional combustion version with a 1.5 flex aspirated engine, and the hybrid version. Both will come with a good list of features, including a floating multimedia center with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, induction charger, digital air conditioning, partially digital dashboard, and rearview camera. In the more complete versions, a sunroof and JBL sound system are expected to be included.
Safety, Extended Warranty, and Positive Environmental Impact
Following the brand’s tradition, the Yaris Cross will be equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense package, offering features such as collision warning with automatic braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beam. All of this has already been confirmed for the Thai version and will be adapted for the Brazilian model.
Another highlight is the extended warranty of up to 10 years for the hybrid system, as long as the customer performs all maintenance at authorized service centers. This policy, called Toyota 10, is already in effect in Brazil for the other hybrid models from the brand and is expected to be extended to the new compact SUV, reinforcing the company’s commitment to reliability and low maintenance costs.

The arrival of the Yaris Cross also contributes to Toyota’s strategy to reduce emissions from the Brazilian fleet. According to data from Anfavea, sales of electrified vehicles in Brazil grew 91% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period the previous year, with a highlight on flex hybrids, which combine cutting-edge technology with existing infrastructure.
A Launch Designed to Lead the Compact Hybrid Market
Toyota sees the Yaris Cross as a real opportunity to increase its market share in the compact SUV segment and consolidate its leadership among hybrid vehicles in the country. The model has all the elements for that: a reliable engine, reduced consumption, modern design, good interior space, and national production.
With an expected launch in October, the SUV is set to be one of the brand’s major bets for the second half, paving the way for a new generation of hybrid models manufactured in Brazil. The expectation is that in the months following the launch, the Yaris Cross will become one of Toyota’s best-selling cars — not only due to its competitive price but also because of the balance between technology, efficiency, and reputation.
