Discover How to Travel One of the Most Spectacular Railways in the World on a 4-Hour Journey Through History and the Atlantic Forest of Paraná.

There are experiences that mark the memory, and the train journey through the Serra do Mar of Paraná is one of them. This route is not just a transportation, but an immersion in history, 19th-century engineering, and the largest preserved area of Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Internationally recognized by publications such as The Guardian and Lonely Planet, this four-hour journey between Curitiba and Morretes reveals stunning landscapes at every turn. This comprehensive guide gathers all the information you need to plan this unforgettable adventure.

Engineering and Progress Without Slavery

The Paranaguá-Curitiba Railway was born in the 19th century, from the need to transport agricultural production from the plateau to the port. The initial vision belonged to brothers André and Antônio Rebouças, the first black engineers in Brazil. Although the project was later taken over by the Baron of Mauá, the Rebouças’ influence was decisive in one notable aspect: the prohibition of the use of enslaved labor, a progressive decision accepted by Emperor Dom Pedro II.

The construction, started in 1880 and inaugurated in 1885, was a monumental achievement. Led by Brazilian engineer João Teixeira Soares, the work overcame the rugged terrain of the mountain range, requiring the creation of 13 tunnels and 41 bridges and viaducts. Structures such as the São João Bridge, standing 55 meters tall, and the Carvalho Viaduct, with its curve over the abyss, are considered engineering masterpieces and have been operational for 140 years.

Four Hours Through the Atlantic Forest

The departure of this incredible train journey takes place at the Rodoferroviária of Curitiba. Slowly, the urban landscape gives way to the exuberance of the Serra do Mar. The train moves at a maximum speed of 30 km/h, a contemplative pace ideal for soaking in the scenery. The route crosses the largest continuous area of Atlantic Forest in the country, revealing mountains, deep valleys, rivers, and waterfalls, like the famous Véu de Noiva.

The experience is enriched by the guides onboard, who narrate the history of the railway and point out geographical and engineering landmarks. Passing through tunnels carved in rock and over century-old bridges provides a unique sensation, blending admiration for nature with fascination for human ingenuity. It is a true live history lesson, with photographic opportunities at every moment.

How to Choose the Ideal Car for Your Train Journey

Sierra Verde Express, the main operator of this journey, offers various categories of cars to cater to all profiles. The Tourist class is the most traditional, with upholstered seats, opening windows, a simple snack, and a guide in Portuguese. For a superior experience, the Boutique category offers themed cars with enhanced onboard service, including beverages and a bilingual guide. This category includes options like the Bove, the first pet-friendly car in the country, and the Camarote, with private cabins. At the top of exclusivity is the Luxury Litorina, considered the only luxury train in Brazil, which features air conditioning, comfortable seats, and premium service. Finally, the Economy class is the most basic, with plastic seats and no onboard service, focused on transporting hikers.

Gastronomy and Activities Beyond the Tracks

The final destination of the train journey is the charming town of Morretes. With its preserved colonial architecture and the serene Nhundiaquara River, the town invites you for a walk. The main gastronomic attraction is the Barreado, a typical dish from the Paraná coast, a slowly cooked meat stew prepared in clay pots.

In addition to savoring the local cuisine, you can explore the Historic Center or venture on trails and tubing in the river. Many packages also include a visit to the neighboring Antonina, another historical town rich in attractions. The return to Curitiba is often made via the Graciosa Road, a scenic route that complements the experience with new views of the mountains.

How to Organize Your Train Journey

Good planning is essential to make the most of the trip. Given the high demand, it is crucial to make reservations in advance, especially for the luxury classes. Trains typically depart from Curitiba in the morning, between 8:15 AM and 8:30 AM, and the trip lasts about four hours. When choosing the best time, note that high season may include exclusive stops, while low season often has more affordable prices. On the day of the train journey, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and don’t forget your camera. Depending on your car class, bringing snacks and water may be a good idea. Remember that the route may experience slight delays due to freight train traffic.
