Robust Investment Will Expand Connectivity Along the Route of South America’s Largest Passenger Train

The Carajás Railway will have 4G coverage throughout the route by the end of 2026.
Vale confirmed the expansion of connectivity across nearly one thousand kilometers. The railway serves 27 municipalities between Maranhão and Pará. The train will have daily circulation in 2027, as per the concession contract signed with the Federal Government.
The company completed the installation of free internet at 15 stations by the end of 2024.

Investment and Technological Infrastructure

The project includes 49 new towers to enhance the signal. The initiative also plans to activate 27 existing towers along the railway.
Vale will invest R$ 200 million in the complete implementation of the network. Vivo will invest R$ 40 million to complement the infrastructure.
The railway communication will migrate from analog to digital. The change will allow for greater operational safety and faster response times.
Technologies such as IoT, Big Data, and Analytics will be utilized more efficiently.

Expanded Operation and Passenger Experience

Departures from São Luís occur at 8 AM and, thus, follow the schedule on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Departures from Parauapebas also happen at 8 AM, occurring on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The trip lasts 16 hours and, therefore, requires stable infrastructure.
With 4G, passengers will be able to stream videos in real time and, in addition, enjoy greater connection stability.
The train operator will have greater operational visibility, leading to safer operations. In 2024, the train transported 423,000 passengers, highlighting the increasing demand.

Economic and Social Impacts

The expansion of connectivity will benefit communities near the railway, thereby increasing access to 4G signal.
Digitization will allow for more efficient operations, thus reducing internal costs. The integration of intelligent systems will enhance process accuracy, making operations safer.
Vale states that these advancements represent an essential part of their industrial modernization strategy, and will therefore continue to enhance efficiency.
