Attacks Began on the Morning of September 11, 2001
On the morning of September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked by 19 members of Al-Qaeda. Two of them were flown into the Twin Towers in New York.
The first struck the North Tower at 8:46 AM. Shortly thereafter, a second aircraft hit the South Tower. The sequence made it clear that this was not an isolated accident and transformed what was happening into a crisis being followed in real-time by the world.
Two Other Airplanes Were Also Hijacked
A third plane was launched at the Pentagon, located near Washington. The fourth, a United Airlines flight, did not reach its intended destination by the hijackers.
Passengers and crew discovered mid-flight what had happened to the other aircraft and attempted to regain control. The plane ultimately crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, before reaching another target.
Collapse of the towers forever changed the Manhattan skyline
After the impacts, the two structures of the World Trade Center collapsed. Images of the Twin Towers surrounded by smoke and, later, disappearing from the horizon became some of the most remembered scenes of that day.
