Uber Announces High-Speed Train Service in Partnership with Gemini Trains. Project Aims to Compete with Eurostar and Connect London to Paris, Brussels, and Lille Starting in 2029.

Uber has officially announced its plans to expand beyond urban mobility and enter the European rail transport sector. The company revealed the Uber Trains project, which aims to launch a fleet of high-speed trains to connect London, Paris, Brussels, and Lille. The service is expected to begin operations in 2029, pending regulatory approvals and necessary infrastructure works.

The announcement marks a bold step for the company, which aims to compete directly with Eurostar, currently the dominant operator for travel through the Channel Tunnel, connecting the UK to mainland Europe.

Alternative to Eurostar

Eurostar transports millions of passengers each year but faces criticism for high fares, frequent delays, and reliability issues. In many cases, a round trip from London to Paris can cost over 230 euros, even when booked in advance.

According to Uber, the entry of a new operator into the sector should create greater competition, putting pressure on prices and improving service quality. The company states that the idea is to offer a simpler, more accessible, and integrated travel experience.

Partnership with Gemini Trains

The project will be developed in collaboration with Gemini Trains, a British startup that has already submitted proposals to the UK’s rail regulatory body. The company will be responsible for train operations and aims to adopt a passenger-centered management model, promising to put the “customer first”.

According to Gemini, the service will offer economy and business class seats at more competitive prices than those currently charged by Eurostar.

Strategic Stations in London

One of the project’s differentiators is the choice of Stratford International in East London as the starting point. The area has undergone significant modernization over the past decades, especially after the 2012 Olympics, and is now considered a transport hub with connections via Elizabeth Line, Overground, DLR, and Southeastern.

The idea is to decentralize boarding, avoiding congestion at the busy St. Pancras International, currently Eurostar’s main terminal. Another station that may be included in the plan is Ebbsfleet International in Kent. According to Gemini Trains, including Stratford and Ebbsfleet could open access to Channel Tunnel travel for up to 18 million people.

Tickets Integrated into the Uber App

Another strategic aspect of the project is the integration of ticket sales into the Uber app itself. Currently, the platform already includes options for urban rides, electric bikes, and even cruises on the River Thames.

With the launch of Uber Trains, users will be able to plan their entire journey within a single app, combining local transport and international rail travel. The company believes that this convenience can attract passengers who currently have to use different platforms to organize their trips.

Expected Impacts on European Rail Transport

Uber’s entry into the rail sector is seen by analysts as a significant shift in the European market. Eurostar, although established, is constantly under fire for high prices and limited options for low-income passengers. With a new operator competing directly, it is expected:

  • Fare reductions, making travel more accessible.
  • Increased seat availability, with more frequent departures.
  • Improvements in customer service, focusing on the travel experience.
  • Pressure for innovation, prompting Eurostar to invest in new services.

According to experts, competition is expected to benefit frequent travelers, such as tourists and workers commuting between the UK, France, and Belgium.

A Long-Term Project

Despite the announcement, the service still depends on regulatory processes and infrastructure works. The plan is for Uber trains to be ready to operate in 2029, but this timeline may vary depending on the progress of approvals.

Even so, Uber emphasizes that the initiative is part of a global diversification strategy, where the company seeks to go beyond ride-hailing apps and establish itself as a comprehensive mobility platform.

International Repercussions

In a statement to The Times, the CEO of Gemini Trains, Adrian Quine, highlighted that the choice of Stratford and Ebbsfleet significantly broadens the potential audience for the service. In an interview with Euronews, representatives from the startup reinforced their commitment to competitive fares and a culture of proximity with passengers.

The news has also resonated in other European media outlets, which point to a scenario of greater competition and a possible revision of Eurostar’s pricing policies.

Uber Trains represents one of the company’s biggest bets outside the urban mobility sector. If the plans proceed on schedule, Uber may open a new chapter in European rail transport, bringing more competition, technological integration, and cost reductions for millions of passengers.

Experts believe that Uber’s arrival in the rail market could be the first step toward even greater changes, with expansion to other routes and countries in the future.
