The Opportunities Include Full Scholarships for English, Spanish, French, Yoruba, and More. Aimed at People in Situations of Social Vulnerability, Classes Start in the First Semester of 2025.

The Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) is accepting applications for free language courses, offering 42 full scholarships aimed at people in situations of social vulnerability.

The initiative, developed by the Permanent Extension Center for Languages (Nupel), aims to increase access to language education, particularly for historically marginalized groups such as indigenous peoples, quilombolas, transgender individuals, and refugees.

Applications are open until next Saturday, December 7, and the spots are intended for the first semester of 2025.

In addition to the exclusive scholarships, there are also spots available for Black individuals, covering both Black and Brown groups, according to self-declaration criteria. For those not covered by the scholarships, there is still the possibility to enroll in non-free spots.

Diversity of Languages Offered

The project includes classes in eight different languages, conducted by students from the UFBA Language program, always under the supervision of qualified teachers. The available languages are:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • German
  • French
  • Italian
  • Kimbundu
  • Yorùbá

The classes will be in-person, reinforcing interaction between teachers and students, and aim to provide learning in various contexts, from basic to intermediate levels.

In addition to the free options, paid courses are available for those who cannot secure a scholarship. Tuition varies depending on the language, with more affordable prices for languages such as Kimbundu and Yoruba.

Who Can Apply?

The full scholarships are exclusively for individuals without academic or professional ties to UFBA. Candidates must meet the following prerequisites:

  • Have an active registration in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico);
  • Be at least 15 years old by the start of the academic semester;
  • Provide proof of completion or enrollment in high school, even if interrupted;
  • Complete the application form with all required documents.

Specific groups, such as indigenous peoples, quilombolas, transgender individuals, and refugees, have four scholarships reserved, reinforcing the university’s commitment to social inclusion.

How Does the Selection Process Work?

The selection will be based on the analysis of documents submitted with the application form. It is necessary to attach all documentation that proves eligibility for the chosen type of spot.

Candidates who are not awarded scholarships may compete for non-free spots, with tuition varying according to the language:

  • English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian: R$ 550.00/semester;
  • Kimbundu and Yoruba: R$ 275.00/semester;
  • Greek and Latin: R$ 180.00/semester.

Classes for all enrolled students will start in the first semester of 2025.

Where to Apply?

Applications must be made exclusively online. The form is available on the official UFBA website, where it is also possible to access the full announcement and obtain more information about the criteria and required documentation.
