The Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) announced this week the opening of 10 thousand spots in a free online course. The opportunities are for the course of Effective Communication with People with Hearing Impairments and Deafness in Primary Health Care.
The course content focuses on health professionals, including managers and supervisors involved in Primary Health Care. However, anyone interested in the topic can enroll in the UFMA’s free online course.

It will present the peculiarities of the history of people with hearing impairments and deafness, the achievements that the Disability Care Network has already made, the forms of communication, as well as the influence of hearing loss on the communication process and the possibilities of restoring the flow of communication using assistive technologies.
Thus, the student will be able to recognize some care strategies for providing more inclusive services by Primary Health Care professionals. Among the topics to be covered are:
- Deaf and Dumb is a Thing of the Past: This will demystify communication with people with hearing impairments and/or deafness.
- Communication, Hearing Loss, and Health Care for People with Hearing Impairments and/or Deafness: a necessary interrelationship.

At the end of the course, the student who is approved in one of the spots will have the ability to recognize effective communication with people with hearing impairments and deafness in Basic Care services, considering communicative possibilities.
Learn How to Enroll in the Free Online Course at UFMA
Those interested in competing for one of the spots in UFMA’s free course must access the registration website, create an account with basic information, fill out an electronic form, and confirm the enrollment.
The free online course has a workload of 180 hours. Enrollment and registration can be completed until August 11. The course will start on the 5th of the same month and is scheduled to end on September 11.
The course is entirely virtual and asynchronous, allowing the student to study at their own pace and attend classes from anywhere. In this UFMA course, participants will have access to videos, e-books, podcasts, interactive infographics, quizzes, and PDF materials.
Evaluation Strategies and UFMA Certificate
The assessment will consist of formative and summative activities. Formative activities will be distributed throughout the educational resources and do not generate grades; however, they assist in verifying learning, such as the Pre and Post-test Learning Situation.
Summative activities are those that count towards a grade. The virtual learning environment will provide one attempt to respond to the Learning Situation, up to two attempts for formative activities, and three attempts to answer each summative activity.
To receive certification in this free online course from UFMA, it is necessary to complete the 3 available modules, each consisting of 60 hours, as the certification will correspond to a total workload of 180 hours. To issue the certificate, the student must achieve a grade of 70 or higher in the final average of the course, considering the grades obtained in each of the three modules, according to the Evaluation Strategies.
