After the Mariana Dam Disaster in Minas Gerais, Samarco Will Resume Operations at Approximately 3 Plants Starting in 2019
Four thousand new direct and indirect employees is what Samarco will need to hire to reach its full production, according to market expectations. The company is expected to resume its activities in the first quarter of next year, after obtaining the necessary environmental licenses to carry out its projects. Among these required professionals, according to Dalla Bernardina, are: mechanics, welders, boilermakers, electricians, and various engineers (environmental, production, metallurgical, among others).
Having been halted since 2015 – when a dam collapsed in the city of Mariana, Minas Gerais, resulting in the deaths of 19 people – Samarco will resume operations at 26% of its capacity, which corresponds to one concentration plant in Minas Gerais and another pelletizing plant in Espírito Santo. For this, it already has the necessary workforce: 1,135 direct workers, according to the press office.

However, the utilization of the other three plants in the Espírito Santo complex will occur gradually. It is precisely during these phases that there is an expectation for hiring. According to the president of the Union of Metallurgical Industries and Electrical Material of Espírito Santo (Sindifer), Lúcio Dalla Bernardina, the resumption will indeed occur in stages. “It will be a slow and gradual hiring process. When fully operational with all four plants running, the number of hires could reach four thousand, both direct and indirect, in two years,” he explained.
