São Paulo Faces Education Crisis With Over 9 Thousand Open Positions for Teachers and Aides: Discover All Available Positions!

The municipal education system of São Paulo, one of the largest in Brazil, is on alert. Currently, the Municipal Secretary of Education of São Paulo (SME-SP) faces a deficit of over 9,400 positions for teachers and aides. This critical scenario directly affects more than 1 million students who rely on the public system for quality education. The need for new professionals is urgent, especially in early childhood and elementary education. Even after recent exams, most of these positions are being filled by temporary teachers, which does not solve the issue definitively.

The SME-SP, which manages a vast network of schools in São Paulo, deals with the lack of effective teachers in various subjects. Among the most affected are Portuguese, Mathematics, Science, and Geography, but the shortage of educators also extends to specific areas, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Sign Language (Libras). Furthermore, the deficit of Technical Education Assistants (ATE) exceeds 1,700 positions, highlighting that the problem is not limited to teachers but also concerns educational support professionals. Despite prior efforts, there remains a significant dependence on temporarily hired professionals.

These temporary hires are a stopgap solution but fail to ensure the stability and continuity that public education requires. In the long run, this can negatively impact the quality of teaching, hindering students’ academic performance. The City Hall of São Paulo has held exams that recently called for more than 7,000 professionals, but the number is still insufficient to meet the growing demand for qualified educators. The crisis could also be worsened by legislation restricting the holding of exams in election years, which limits hiring and exacerbates the situation.

How Many Positions Are Open and What Are the Positions?

According to data obtained through the Access to Information Law, requested by a visitor on the Colabora Concursos website, the vacancy deficit in the São Paulo education network exceeds 9,000 positions. The main shortages are in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood and Elementary Education Teacher I (PEIF I): 5,237 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Portuguese: 240 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Mathematics: 380 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Science: 345 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – History: 125 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Geography: 376 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – English: 421 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Arts: 293 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Physical Education: 253 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Biology: 5 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Chemistry: 4 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Physics: 4 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Spanish: 3 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Sociology: 4 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Philosophy: 2 positions
  • Elementary and High School Teacher – Sign Language (Libras): 8 positions
  • Technical Education Assistant (ATE): 1,706 positions

These data illustrate the extent of the problem. The highest demand is for early childhood and elementary education teachers, which together represent over half of the total open positions.

How Will Hiring Be Conducted?

In light of this situation, many are wondering how the municipality plans to address the deficit of professionals. Due to restrictions imposed in election years, the opening of new exams may be limited, which creates a challenge for public administration. However, the expectation is that new selection processes will be opened in the coming months, focusing on effective hires. Temporary teachers continue to be hired, but the definitive solution will only be achieved through the ratification of new public exams.

Selected candidates for the positions must meet the specific requirements for each role. For early childhood and elementary education teachers, a degree in Education or a specific teaching license for basic education is required. For subjects in elementary and high school, a degree in the specific area of expertise is necessary. Additionally, candidates must undergo an objective test and evaluation of academic credentials, which are common stages in public competitions for the education field.

When Will Enrollment and Applications Be Held?

Currently, there is no set date for the holding of new public exams. However, the City Hall of São Paulo is aware of the urgency and severity of the problem. The last selection process called for more than 7,000 teachers, but due to high demand, new calls are expected in the coming months. It is essential for interested candidates to pay attention to upcoming announcements, which will be published on the official SME-SP website and other official communication channels of the city hall.

Applications for the exams are usually held online, through specific platforms provided by the city hall. Candidates should keep an eye on the publication dates of the announcements to avoid missing the chance to apply for the positions. Moreover, it is important for interested professionals to start preparing by reviewing the content required in previous tests, which typically include questions about pedagogical knowledge and specific content related to their area of expertise.

How to Register for Upcoming Exams?

To participate in the upcoming exams and fill one of the more than 9,400 positions in the São Paulo municipal network, candidates must follow updates on the official SME-SP website and on competition portals. Applications are usually made online, and deadlines are announced in advance. At the moment, there is still no official schedule, but new announcements are expected to be released soon to meet the growing need for education professionals.
