The UH-72B Lakota will strengthen the U.S. Army’s light fleet with 12 new aircraft contracted from Airbus. The deal starts at $115.4 million and may reach $140.7 million, while production and services continue in Alabama until 2030, focusing on training, transport, and domestic emergencies.

The UH-72B Lakota will gain more prominence in U.S. Army aviation following a new order for up to 12 light helicopters from Airbus. The contract has an initial value of $115.4 million and could rise to $140.7 million, encompassing aircraft, associated equipment, and program management services.

According to Cavok Brasil, in a publication dated August 17, 2026, production and related work under the agreement will be carried out by Airbus at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. Contract execution is expected to continue until December 31, 2030, utilizing resources from aircraft acquisition programs for fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

UH-72B Lakota Expands Light Helicopter Fleet

The order enhances a family of helicopters already performing various roles within the U.S. military structure. The UH-72B Lakota is utilized for missions that do not necessarily require larger, more complex aircraft designed for combat environments.

This classification allows platforms to be allocated based on mission type. Training, personnel transport, liaison, surveillance, search and rescue, and aeromedical evacuation are among the activities associated with the Lakota family, in addition to domestic operations conducted to support civil authorities.

Contract Starts at $115.4 Million

The amount initially agreed with Airbus Helicopters Inc. is $115.4 million. However, considering the provisions for future execution, the total could rise to $140.7 million.

The agreement is not limited to the helicopters. It also includes associated equipment and program management. Ejectable cabin doors, air conditioning systems, and barrier filters for engine air intakes are among the planned items.

Production Will Continue in Alabama Until 2030

Work related to the new contract will be carried out at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. The schedule establishes execution until the last day of 2030, creating a multi-year framework for production and services related to the program.

The resources utilized come from aircraft acquisition programs for fiscal years 2024 and 2025. Thus, the order integrates a modernization program that extends until the end of the decade, rather than merely representing a one-time purchase.

Main rotor features five blades

The UH-72B Lakota is the latest version of the Lakota, introducing significant changes compared to the UH-72A. One of these changes is the main rotor, which employs five blades.

This configuration is part of the evolution of the platform derived from the Airbus H145 family. The helicopter also features a Fenestron tail rotor, a solution integrated into the design developed by the manufacturer for this generation of the aircraft.

Engines use FADEC digital control

The propulsion is provided by two Safran Arriel 2E engines. They operate with a FADEC system, which stands for Full Authority Digital Engine Control.

This technology automates aspects of propulsion management and reduces tasks that would need to be directly handled by the crew. The combination of modern engines and electronic control is part of the enhancement package introduced in the UH-72B version.

Helionix centralizes part of the cockpit modernization

Another significant change is in the avionics. The helicopter employs the Helionix system, developed by Airbus to reduce pilots’ workload and enhance situational awareness during missions.

This system consolidates information necessary for operation and works in conjunction with other onboard systems. The modernization aims to make the cockpit more suitable for missions that can range from training to emergency responses.

Autopilot operates in four axes

The UH-72B Lakota also features a four-axis autopilot. The system can automate various tasks during flight, reducing the operational burden on the crew.

In extended missions or those conducted in higher-demand scenarios, this type of assistance can take over some of the aircraft control functions. The goal is to enhance operational safety and allow pilots to focus more on the environment and the mission itself.

Model began arriving at the Army in 2021

The first deliveries of the UH-72B to the U.S. Army began in 2021, initially focusing on the needs of the National Guard.

The aircraft is derived from the Airbus H145, an existing platform. This allows for the incorporation of more modern features without starting the development of a completely new military helicopter from scratch, thus reducing some of the typical risks associated with new programs.

Lakota is used for pilot training

A key function of the family lies in crew training. Lakota helicopters are employed in pilot training, creating a specific role within the military aviation structure.

The use of a light aircraft in this capacity also helps preserve platforms intended for more demanding tasks. The idea is to match the helicopter’s capability level with the complexity of each operation.

Medical transport and evacuation are among the missions

Search and rescue expands function beyond training

The Lakota family is also active in emergency scenarios. Versatility is one of the factors that allows the Army to use the same type of helicopter for military support and domestic response tasks.

National Guard can deploy helicopters in emergencies

The National Guard plays a significant role in responding to emergencies within the United States. In these situations, helicopters can assist civil authorities during natural disasters and search operations.

The Lakota can be utilized for transport, reconnaissance, and operation coordination. Thus, the aircraft occupies a mission space that connects military needs with support activities within U.S. territory.

Lakota takes on roles different from the Black Hawk

The strategy also allows for the separation of missions according to the required capacity. Helicopters like the UH-60 Black Hawk are designed for tasks that demand higher capability and survivability in combat environments.

Meanwhile, the UH-72 can take on less complex operations. This distribution helps prevent more sophisticated aircraft from being employed indiscriminately in tasks that can be handled by a light platform.

New order reinforces the UH-72B Lakota’s presence until the end of the decade

With the new helicopters, the U.S. Army expands a fleet that combines pilot training, transport, surveillance, aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, and emergency responses. Five-blade rotor, Safran Arriel 2E engines with FADEC, Helionix avionics, and four-axis autopilot mark the technical evolution of the UH-72B model.

The contract also illustrates how a lightweight platform can serve different roles without replacing helicopters designed for more demanding combat missions.
