330 Job Openings Will Be Created To Support The Renovation Works On Blast Furnace 2 Of The Usiminas Steel Mill In Minas Gerais

Investments of R$ 219 million this year and in 2020 confirmed by the Usiminas steel mill will demand 330 job openings to support the maintenance works of blast furnace 2 and operational improvements of the unit. This month, the company announced 500 job openings for different areas in Ipatinga, stay tuned as the company will soon announce new opportunities.

The steel mill is located in Ipatinga, in the state of Minas Gerais. According to the owner of the mill, the government of the state of Minas Gerais, the investments will be in purchasing equipment, civil works for renovations in piping systems and hoods, and works on the dust removal system.

The meeting between the government and the management of the steel mill that marked the signing of the memorandum of understanding took place in September, and it was also announced that the renovation works on the blast furnace will not only create new job openings but will also increase the mill’s lifespan by 20 years.

Immediately after this renovation of blast furnace 2, Usiminas management will start preparing for the major shutdown that will occur starting in 2021.

Thiago Toscano, the president of Indi, the investment promotion agency of the state of Minas Gerais, highlighted the importance of increasing the mill’s capacity.

“With this, Usiminas will be able to increase its production capacity already in 2020. The government agreed to defer the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) for imported parts without a national equivalent. This was yet another step for the major investment of the steel mill in the coming years, which is the renovation of blast furnace 3.”

Blast furnace 1 consumed R$ 80 million last year in renovation works, but the mill did not halt production; together, blast furnaces 1 and 2 produce 4,000 tons of pig iron daily.

Blast furnace 3, which will stop for maintenance in 2021, produces 7,000 tons of pig iron daily on its own, nearly double that of the other two units.

Blast furnace 3 has also been in operation for 20 years, and the intention is to extend its lifespan by another 20 years. The total investment in renovations is estimated at R$ 1.234 billion, confirming Usiminas’ confidence in the market recovery in the coming years.

Vitor de Mendonça, the Secretary of State for Economic Development (Sede), believes that the confirmation of investments strengthens the steel industry.
