The government agreed to defer the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services) for imported parts without a national equivalent. This was yet another step for the major investment of the steel mill in the coming years, which is the renovation of blast furnace 3.”
Blast furnace 1 consumed R$ 80 million last year in renovation works, but the mill did not halt production; together, blast furnaces 1 and 2 produce 4,000 tons of pig iron daily.
Blast furnace 3, which will stop for maintenance in 2021, produces 7,000 tons of pig iron daily on its own, nearly double that of the other two units.
Blast furnace 3 has also been in operation for 20 years, and the intention is to extend its lifespan by another 20 years. The total investment in renovations is estimated at R$ 1.234 billion, confirming Usiminas’ confidence in the market recovery in the coming years.
Vitor de Mendonça, the Secretary of State for Economic Development (Sede), believes that the confirmation of investments strengthens the steel industry.
