Historical Energy Milestone Achieved In 2021 By The Itaipu Binational Hydroelectric Plant Is Sufficient To Supply The World For More Than 19 Hours!
Despite the water crisis that Brazil is facing, the annual generation of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant demonstrates that the plant remains vital for the energy security of Brazil and Paraguay. The Itaipu plant reached a mark of 66,369,253 megawatt-hours (MWh) generated in 2021, which supplied 8.4% of Brazil’s electricity consumption and 85.6% of Paraguay’s. This volume of energy would be sufficient to supply the planet Earth for more than 19 hours, Brazil for over a month, and Paraguay for more than two years.

According to the Brazilian Director-General of Itaipu, General João Francisco Ferreira, the company has overcome the adverse scenario of drought with increasingly efficient production, ensuring clean and renewable energy for Brazilian and Paraguayan consumers.
“In a world that discusses how to produce energy without emitting greenhouse gases, Itaipu remains vital for positioning Brazil and Paraguay among the countries with the most sustainable energy matrices,” said the director, also highlighting the company’s environmental strategy to preserve ecosystems to protect the reservoir and, consequently, ensure energy generation in the long term.

Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant Achieves Best Annual Energy Index Of All Time
The low inflow of the Paraná River in the last two years has led binational technicians to continuously improve the coordination between energy generation and the need to periodically stop each generating unit for preventive maintenance, also considering the amount of water that reaches the reservoir and the electricity demand of the systems of both countries.
This strategy, which seeks to make the most of the water for energy production, has led the plant to break successive productivity records. In 2019, for every cubic meter of water that passed per second through the generating units, 1.079 MW was produced, until then, the best mark of the plant. In 2020, the index improved, reaching an average of 1.087 MW per m3/s.
In 2021, Itaipu technicians further improved this management process and, for the third consecutive year, set a new productivity record, with 1.098 MWméd/m³/s, with emphasis on the month of July, when the best monthly mark in the plant’s history was reached, with 1.1221 MWméd/m³/s.
For the Executive Technical Director of Itaipu, Celso Torino, the constant pursuit of greater efficiency is a strategy that Itaipu has been improving for several years and should remain as an important lesson learned, even in a scenario of hydrological recovery in the future. “This synergy between the teams will be essential to ensure maximum production during the plant’s Technological Upgrade process,” said Torino.
The Production Of 66.3 Million MWh Is Sufficient To Supply:
- The World For More Than 19 Hours;
- Brazil For More Than 1 Month;
- The City Of São Paulo For More Than 1 Year;
- Paraguay For 3 Years;
- The State Of Paraná For Nearly 2 Years;
- The City Of Foz do Iguaçu For More Than 86 Years.
We can also reference that the total generated by the Brazilian-Paraguayan plant would be sufficient to supply about 36 million households (considering the average consumption of a Brazilian family, of 152 kWh/month) and is approximately equivalent to the production of the two largest entirely Brazilian hydroelectric plants combined: while Tucuruí registered 33 million MWh, Belo Monte produced 31 million MWh.
Itaipu
With 20 generating units and 14,000 MW of installed capacity, Itaipu Binational is the world leader in the generation of clean and renewable energy, having produced, since 1984, 2.8 billion MWh. The hydroelectric plant is responsible for supplying approximately 11% of all energy consumed by Brazil and approximately 90% of the Paraguay.
