Proquigel Takes Over Petrobras Factories for Nitrogen Fertilizers in Bahia and Sergipe (Fafen) for Ten Years
On August 4, 2020, the takeover of the new facilities by Proquigel Química SA was celebrated, which leased the Nitrogen Fertilizer Factories of Sergipe and Bahia (Fafen) from Petrobras for 10 years. The new company created jobs in Bahia and Sergipe in March of this year as soon as it began its operations in the factories.
With activities in neighboring states, Proquigel spent about R$ 177 million during the transaction to gain control over Petrobras’s Fafens in Bahia and Sergipe for a decade, which can be extended for the same period.
The lease includes, in addition to the Petrobras factories, the ammonia and urea maritime terminals at the Port of Aratu, Bahia. According to the company, the plan is for operations to begin in early 2021.
A producer of ammonia, fertilizer urea, livestock urea, industrial urea, nitric acid, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide, Fafen in Sergipe, located in the municipality of Laranjeiras, has been hibernating since early 2019. According to the Government of Sergipe, the factory’s production capacity has reached 300,000 tons of ammonium sulfate per year, with exports worldwide.
Since Petrobras initiated the company’s hibernation, the government tried in various ways at the time to find solutions to avoid losing production and activity of such magnitude in the state, given that Fafen has always been of great importance to the economic development of the Baixo Cotinguiba region.
