Raízen of the Shell Group Wants to Build Three Ethanol Production Plants Using Bagasse and Sugarcane Straw

Raízen, the global ethanol giant in partnership with Shell, intends to build three additional cellulosic ethanol plants — or second generation. The good news was announced by businessman Rubens Ometto of Cosan on (03/15).

According to Raízen, the purchase includes nine strategically located sugar and ethanol mills (six in the State of São Paulo, two in Mato Grosso do Sul, and one in Minas Gerais), representing an installed milling capacity of up to 32 million tons of cane. The operation also includes cogeneration of energy, with the capacity to export up to 1.3 GWh of electricity/year, and an area of 280,000 hectares of planted cane.

With the integration, Raízen, a joint venture of Cosan and Shell, will have a total of 35 ethanol-producing mills, totaling an installed milling capacity of 105 million tons of cane and about 1.3 million hectares of crops, equivalent to 15% of the Brazilian planted area.
