Vale announced the purchase of 50 Evolution series locomotives, manufactured by Wabtec, which will operate on the Vitória-Minas and Carajás railroads. The aim is to reduce fuel consumption, increase machine power, and decrease pollution in rail transportation.
The decision is part of the company’s plan to improve freight transport and help meet the goal of reducing pollutant gas emissions. The first locomotives are expected to arrive starting in 2026 and will be produced in Minas Gerais.
The mining company Vale confirmed this week the purchase of 50 locomotives from the Evolution line, made by Wabtec Corporation. These new vehicles will be used on the Estrada de Ferro Vitória-Minas (EFVM) and Estrada de Ferro Carajás (EFC) railroads. The locomotives will be produced in Contagem, Minas Gerais, and are expected to start being delivered in 2026. The company Wabtec, responsible for manufacturing, stated that the Evolution model is one of the most modern on the market and helps save fuel and reduce maintenance costs.
According to a report from UOL, the machines feature AC traction motors, which increase the capacity to pull heavy loads by more than 50%. This type of motor is already in use on the Carajás railroad and will now also be used on the Vitória-Minas.
Carlos Medeiros, Vice President of Operations at Vale, stated on Wabtec’s official site that the new fleet will assist in the decarbonization process of rail transportation. The locomotives can use a higher blend of biodiesel, which helps reduce harmful gases to the environment.
According to Terra, this investment shows that Vale is committed to improving its infrastructure and also taking care of the environment. The company aims to have a more efficient, modern transport system with less environmental impact.
Another important point is that these new locomotives have a system that consumes less fuel, helping to reduce expenses and improve travel performance. As explained by Wabtec, this brings benefits for both the company and sustainability.
The expectation is that modernizing the fleet will bring improvements not only to Vale but also to the country’s logistics. The Vitória-Minas and Carajás railroads are essential for transporting ore and other cargo in Brazil.
