Will McDonald’s And CNN Be Bought By Elon Musk? Here’s The Whole Truth Behind This Story
If there is one thing Elon Musk knows how to do, besides electric cars and rockets, it’s fueling the internet’s imagination. Over the past few weeks, social media exploded with rumors that the South African billionaire was about to acquire nothing less than McDonald’s and CNN. One question was frequent: “Is Elon Musk going to buy CNN?” was widely searched on search engines.
But is there any truth to this story or is it just another one of the many wild theories circulating on the internet?
Musk And McDonald’s: A Fusion Of Fast Food And Technology?
It all started with a video that went viral at the end of October, claiming that Musk had announced: “I’m buying McDonald’s.” This rumor was fueled by an unusual context involving McDonald’s in the 2024 presidential elections in the U.S.

While Donald Trump, former president and reelection candidate, used a chain store as a backdrop for his campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris also brought the brand to the spotlight, revealing she had worked there in her youth.
But hold on: neither Elon Musk nor McDonald’s made any official statement about this supposed purchase. In fact, the only public “relationship” between Musk and McDonald’s happened in 2022 when he joked on Twitter that he would eat a Happy Meal on TV if the chain accepted Dogecoin as payment. The response from McDonald’s was equally playful, but nothing beyond that.
And What About CNN?
Another, even more ambitious rumor stated that Musk was negotiating to buy CNN for US$ 3 billion. The motivation? “Fixing the media” and confronting what many consider to be a pro-democratic company. This rumor gained traction, especially after Musk became one of the largest donors to Trump’s campaign.
However, again, the truth is not quite that. This story started from a satire account called Gridiron Glory, which made it clear that its posts should not be taken seriously. There is no promise that Musk is interested in acquiring CNN, and both the billionaire and the network have remained absolutely silent about this rumor.
The Truth Amid The Confusion
What really happened, and perhaps contributed to all this speculation, was Elon Musk’s appointment to the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the Trump administration. Yes, the acronym refers to Dogecoin — and the name is very much Musk.
The goal of DOGE, according to Trump, is to cut waste, bureaucracy, and excessive spending in the federal government. Alongside Musk, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy was also appointed. Regarding his new role, Musk joked: “Unlike you, none of us are being paid. So, it’s very efficient indeed.”
