Traveling for 13 hours aboard a train that covers 664 kilometers, crossing rivers, mountains, and stunning landscapes, is an experience that has increasingly captivated Brazilians.

According to updated information from May 2025, the Vitória-Minas Railway, which connects Minas Gerais to Espírito Santo, is the only train in the country with a tourist route and daily long-distance departures.

This historic railway, inaugurated in 1904 to transport coffee production, has become one of the most appreciated tourist attractions in the region, transporting about 700 thousand passengers annually.

The route unfolds along the banks of the Rio Doce, offering views that alternate between the dense Atlantic Forest, Cerrado areas, imposing mountains, and abundant rivers.

The diversity of the scenery impresses everyone who boards, revealing a deep connection with Brazilian nature.

In addition to its tourist role, the railway plays a strategic function for the local economy by transporting essential cargoes such as iron ore, soy, and fertilizers between the two states.

The train features air conditioning, onboard service with snacks, and entertainment with monitors present in all cars, both in executive and economy class, according to recent traveler reports.

With approximately 16 cars, the train also includes a snack bar and a restaurant, ensuring that comfort and convenience are present throughout the journey.

Along the route, travelers have the option to disembark and board at 30 stations, with 21 located in Minas Gerais and nine in Espírito Santo.

This structure facilitates local communities’ access to the railway, promoting regional integration.

More Than a Ride: Cargo Transportation and Environmental Challenges

Although the Vitória-Minas Railway is one of the gems of Brazilian railway tourism, its primary function remains the transportation of iron ore to the Port of Tubarão, in the capital of Espírito Santo.

According to recent studies, the city of Vitória faces a chronic air pollution problem caused by the transport of “black powder,” a residue from the movement of ore.

This environmental issue has mobilized residents, authorities, and the company responsible for operating the train, Vale S.A.

In 2015, public complaints against Vale led to the creation of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) regarding black powder, formed by city councilors.

Since then, the company has been directed to implement actions to mitigate pollutant emissions and reduce the impacts on air quality in the region, as established by state environmental authorities.

The State Institute of Environment and Water Resources of Espírito Santo requested a detailed study from the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB).

The result was a report containing a plan of goals to reduce atmospheric pollution caused by the railway.

Furthermore, Vale has been investing in technologies for constant monitoring of air quality and controlling emissions during ore transport.

Such measures are essential to ensure that railway tourism, which relies on the valuation of the natural landscape, can coexist with the region’s economic activities.

Essa empresa faz o mesmo trajeto também entre 2 Estados, Pará e Maranhão com paisagens linda Amazônia, e as pessoas não falam não entendo o prq🤔😡

Ainda quero fazer este passeio já vi falar muito bem dele,sei que é mais demorado que o passeio de Curitiba pra Morretes ; então vou amar ainda mais estar dentro desse trem em uma viagem assim..
E será apenas minha terceira viagem de trem na vida.
Mas espero que não seja a última..
