Pilot achieves impressive feat landing plane on high-speed train and challenges the limits of modern aviation.

An Italian pilot performed an unprecedented maneuver by landing a plane on a moving train at 120 km/h in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey, on February 15. The person responsible for this feat is Dario Costa, an acrobatic pilot, who managed to align the aircraft with a freight car before landing and taking off again.

The operation was carried out with a Zivko Edge 540 aircraft and required extreme precision, intensive training, and coordination with engineering teams. The goal of the challenge was to push the boundaries of aviation and test the capability of landings on moving platforms.

Pilot faced blind landing aligning plane with train

During the final approach, the pilot completely lost sight of the landing area. This happened when the plane was about 200 meters from the train, due to the aircraft’s descent angle.

Nevertheless, the pilot maintained control and proceeded with the maneuver. He had to rely solely on wind perception, experience, and flight instruments.

Additionally, aligning with the train was considered the most critical moment. The available landing area was extremely narrow, located on the last container of the train.

Plane and train required precise speed synchronization

For the landing to be possible, a meticulous speed adjustment between the plane and the train was necessary. While the train was traveling at 120 km/h, the pilot reduced the aircraft’s speed to about 87 km/h.

This difference required constant control and small adjustments throughout the approach. Furthermore, the pilot faced turbulence caused by air variations around the moving train.

Therefore, the stability of the plane depended on continuous corrections. Any mistake could compromise the entire operation.

Pilot trained for months to land plane on train

The project began preparation in early 2024. Since then, engineering and flight teams have worked on detailed simulations to reproduce the real conditions of the maneuver.

The tests were conducted at the Red Bull Athlete Performance Center in Austria. Since it was not possible to conduct real rehearsals with a moving train, ground training was essential.

Meanwhile, the pilot also improved reflexes and concentration. The goal was to reduce response time in critical situations.

Pilot highlights challenge of controlling plane on moving runway

After executing the maneuver, the pilot highlighted the complexity of the challenge. According to him, the biggest obstacle was learning to land without direct visual contact with the runway.

“The landing was one of the most challenging and demanding projects of my career. There were many variables to measure, but the biggest test was learning to land blind on a very small moving runway, relying only on cognitive and flying skills,” he stated.

Additionally, he emphasized that the experience required high-level mental and physical control. The margin for error was practically nonexistent.

Train and plane unite two means of transport in unprecedented feat

This feat marked the first time a plane successfully interacted with a moving train. The maneuver united two of the most important means of transport in history.

On one side, the train, a symbol of the industrial revolution. On the other, the plane, a representative of modern technology.

Thus, the project gained relevance not only for its technical difficulty. It also symbolizes the evolution of transport over time.

Pilot had already performed other extreme maneuvers with plane

Dario Costa is already known for extreme challenges in aviation. In 2021, he flew a plane through two road tunnels near Istanbul, Turkey.

At that time, he covered about 1,730 meters in an extremely restricted environment. Even so, the pilot was seeking an even greater challenge.

The idea of landing on a train arose after observing a moving convoy. From that point, he began studying possibilities for unconventional landings.

The success of the operation reinforces the advancement of flight techniques and aerodynamic planning. According to the specialists involved, the project was only possible thanks to the combination of technology, simulation, and training.

Moreover, the execution demonstrates how aviation can explore new operational scenarios. Landing on a moving surface expands future possibilities.

Finally, the pilot highlighted the impact of the feat. “I am proud that we have changed the definition of what is possible in aviation,” he stated.

Thus, the landing of the plane on the train not only impresses but also redefines the limits of controlled flight in extreme environments.
