Volkswagen Redesigns The Future Of One Of Its Most Iconic Models Amid The Transition To Electric Cars, Industrial Changes In Germany And Mexico, And A New Technology Platform That Should Redefine The Golf In The Coming Years.
Volkswagen has given the clearest signal yet that the Golf will enter a new phase.
During a meeting with workers in Wolfsburg, Germany, the brand showcased a teaser image of the future electric hatchback and emphasized that the factory will be the center of its new generation of battery-powered compacts.
At the same time, the group determined that the production of the combustion Golf will leave Wolfsburg and be transferred to Puebla, Mexico starting in 2027.

Fiat launches the new 2027 Toro hybrid with 48V, 176 hp, an electric motor of 15.5 hp, a 0.85 kWh battery, up to 7% fuel savings, 8% fewer emissions, and possible exemption from IPVA.
As a result, the manufacturer is preparing for a coexistence between the current model and its electric successor, keeping the Golf name in the transition to electric vehicles and a new electronic architecture.
The change carries weight beyond just a generational shift.
Launched in the 1970s, the Golf has established itself as one of the main references in the medium hatch segment and as one of the most relevant models for Volkswagen on a global scale.
Now, the company is attempting to take this name into the era of electrification without repeating the visual and conceptual break that marked the debut of the ID family.
Instead of abandoning the traditional denomination, the strategy indicates that the Golf will remain at the center of the brand’s portfolio, but on an unprecedented technical platform.
New Electric Golf: What Is Known About The Next Generation
So far, Volkswagen has not disclosed technical specifications, dimensions, battery capacity, or a fixed launch timeline.
Nevertheless, the material presented internally and the group’s recent communications indicate that the future electric Golf is expected to arrive by the end of the decade and will be based on the SSP, which stands for Scalable Systems Platform.
The platform was introduced by Volkswagen as the future electric and electronic foundation for the group, with planned application across different brands and segments.

In this context, the SSP plays a strategic role since it is not limited to a new platform for electric cars.
According to Volkswagen, it is designed to bring together more advanced electronic architecture, greater industrial standardization, and deeper software integration.
In corporate documents, the group claims that the SSP will serve as the foundation for a new generation of electric vehicles and software-defined vehicles, in which remote updates and centralized function management will play a central role.
Partnership With Rivian And Volkswagen’s New Software
This is where the partnership with Rivian comes in.
In 2024, Volkswagen and the American manufacturer announced a joint venture focused on the development of electric architecture and software.
By 2025, the group announced that this work was advancing to support a next-generation zonal electronic architecture, with future application in models of the conglomerate.
Volkswagen itself stated that the partnership’s technology will be integrated into electric vehicles based on the SSP, placing the future Golf among the projects linked to this new technological cycle.
The change helps explain why the project goes beyond electrifying a well-established name.
The next generation of the Golf is expected to be born in an environment where car functions are centered around modular central computers, with the possibility of over-the-air updates and continuous evolution of infotainment systems, connectivity, and driver assistance.
At the same time, the teaser presented by the brand suggests the preservation of recognizable visual traits of the Golf, in an attempt to maintain the model’s identity during the transition.
Wolfsburg, Puebla, And The Change In Golf Production
The industrial reorganization helps explain the timing of this change.
The agreement reached between Volkswagen and unions at the end of 2024 determined that the production of the Golf and Golf Variant with combustion engine will move from Wolfsburg to Puebla starting in 2027.
Meanwhile, the German factory will align with the plan to concentrate the brand’s new electric compact family.
Months later, the leadership of the workers’ council reiterated support for the measure, stating that global demand for the combustion Golf has been declining and that the industrial restructuring of Wolfsburg depends on this transition.
The numbers quoted by representatives of the workers help to contextualize the situation.
According to data mentioned by Reuters, global production of the Golf exceeded 1 million units in 2015, fell to slightly more than 300,000 in 2024, and was projected to be around 250,000 in 2025.

This decline helps explain the decision to maintain the combustion lineage in another production hub for a few more years while Wolfsburg prepares for the electric generation of the hatch.
Design Of The Electric Golf Mk9 And What The Teaser Indicates
The teaser shown in Germany does not allow for many details to be confirmed, but suggests an attempt to preserve classic Golf traits.
The silhouette remains close to that of a traditional hatch, without adopting the short MPV design adopted by some recent electric vehicles on the market.
This point is relevant because the Golf has built its trajectory based on a visual identity marked by sobriety and recognizable proportions.
The initial reading of the released material is that Volkswagen seeks to update the model without completely breaking away from this formula.
Inside, the primary issue involves the user experience.
In recent years, the brand has faced criticism from part of the specialized press and consumers due to excessive reliance on digital controls in some models.
As the partnership with Rivian and the future SSP architecture promise significant progress in the area of software, the industry expects a more mature interface in the upcoming vehicles of the platform.
Official Name, GTI Versions, And Launch Still Open
There is also no public definition regarding commercial nomenclature, sporty versions, range, power, or priority markets.
Part of the European press refers to the project as a possible “ID. Golf”, but Volkswagen has not yet formalized this name in an official statement about the model.
For the same reason, there is no secure confirmation about GTI or R variants for this future electric family.
What has been confirmed so far is the industrial plan: Wolfsburg will be repositioned for the brand’s electric compacts, the combustion Golf will migrate to Mexico in 2027, and the next electric generation is expected by the end of the decade on the SSP, with software developed in the ecosystem created by the partnership with Rivian.
