RS Is Investing in Studies and Partnerships for Carbon Emission Reduction. The State Signed a Memorandum of Understanding with White Martins for the Construction of a Green Hydrogen Plant
White Martins and the RS government signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday (14) at the Palácio Piratini for the implementation of the Green Hydrogen program, which is aimed at the construction and development of renewable energy in the state. RS has been conducting studies with the intention of making an energy transition for decarbonization through the use of green hydrogen, creating a new segment in the high value-added and technology economic matrix. Currently, the State already carries out its activities with 80% of the energy from the renewable matrix, where about 20% comes from wind energy and there is a great potential for expansion.

The use of hydrogen also aligns with the commitment made by the State to reduce carbon emissions by up to 50% by 2030, a target also set by Brazil in the Paris Agreement. Governor Eduardo Leite attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), which took place in November in Glasgow, Scotland, to reaffirm RS’s commitment.
White Martins is a multinational company that operates in the market for the production of medical and industrial gases. RS’s interest stems from the abundant natural resources that make it possible to generate carbon-free energy.

In addition, the State is also a leader in environmental policy in the country. The purpose of the memorandum is to enable RS and White Martins to identify the possible actions of each party so that necessary actions and opportunities can be mapped, following the legal regulations that govern them, with the aim of facilitating the development and operation of an ammonia and green hydrogen industrial plant, using clean energy, in RS.
Port of Rio Grande Could Host the Green Hydrogen Project
According to the Executive Director of Business at White Martins, Mário Simon, decarbonization is a fact and is the imminent future for all the population. There will be some steps before reaching green hydrogen; however, this will happen in rapid phases, as it is a need and a desire of the population.
Simon stated that the company is pleased with the partnership with the RS Government and is willing to advance this serious and joint work in the search for an energy solution through green hydrogen for the State.
The location seen as a candidate to host the project is the Port of Rio Grande, in Rio Grande. It is the largest industrial district in the state, covering 2,580 hectares, strategically positioned, with available retro-areas and advantages that present synergy with productive chains. Additionally, there are logistical advantages, such as the reception of raw materials and the outflow of production. In 2019 alone, the port’s traffic exceeded 3,000 ships.
