The New Fleet of Tugboats from Wilson Sons, Entitled WS Centaurus, Has Unique Technology That Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Increases Sustainability in the Company’s Maritime Transport Operations.

The logistics company Wilson Sons continues, on Tuesday, (06/14), the operations begun last week with its new fleet of WS Centaurus tugboats. These new vessels have sustainability technology that provides a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, such as nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide. The company intends to deliver the entire fleet with 6 vessels by the end of 2023 for use in maritime transport operations.

New WS Centaurus Tugboat Fleet from Wilson Sons Features Sustainability Technology That Ensures Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Operations

Wilson Sons began activities last week with the first of six tugboats from the new WS Centaurus fleet, which brings innovation and technology to the Brazilian port market to ensure greater sustainability in cargo transportation.

The vessels feature the Damen RSD 2513 design, which ensures a new hull design that allows for an estimated reduction of up to 14% in greenhouse gas emissions, guaranteeing more sustainability in operations.

Sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are ensured as the twin fins improve navigation and increase the towing capacity during maneuvers, which means that the new fleet of tugboats requires less fuel for transportation.

Additionally, the WS Centaurus is a pioneer in the country, following the IMO TIER III standard, which promotes a reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions by more than 75%, bringing even greater environmental commitment to the fleet.

Thus, executive Márcio Castro, CEO of the Tugboat Division at Wilson Sons, commented on the importance of utilizing this new technology in the tugboat fleet and said that this is the future of the maritime transport market in Brazil. Castro emphasized: “The delivery of the new tugboats demonstrates the relevance of innovation and sustainability for Wilson Sons. In over 180 years of the company’s history, we have always sought to be at the forefront of the market, which is why our vessels are bringing unprecedented energy efficiency standards to Brazil.”

Completion of Delivery of the 6 WS Centaurus Tugboats Fleet Expected in 2023, with the Last Vessel in Operation

The WS Centaurus vessel was fully constructed at the Wilson Sons shipyard in Guarujá (SP), with a design from Damen Shipyards, and will be responsible for operations in the region of São Luís do Maranhão, to complement the fleet of 11 tugboats that the company maintains in the area.

Thus, the first of the fleet of 6 tugboats will be responsible for support services for the boarding and disembarking of vessels at the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal, as well as at the Port of Itaqui.

The choice for the start of operations at the Ponta da Madeira Maritime Terminal and the Port of Itaqui was based on the constant arrival of large vessels at these locations, ensuring greater energy utilization in the region. Thus, the WS Centaurus will be able to contribute to bring even more sustainability to cargo transport operations in the complexes over the next few months.

Wilson Sons also announced that two more tugboats from the fleet with sustainability technology are expected to be delivered this year 2022, and that, to complete the project, the other 3 WS Centaurus will be delivered by the end of 2023, with the full fleet ready for operations in Brazil.
