According to Petrobras, the FPSO Guanabara Is the Result of Years of Experience in the Pre-Salt and the Most Complex Oil Production Unit in the Country
A few days ago, Petrobras began oil and natural gas production via the FPSO Guanabara, which consists of the first definitive production system located in the Mero field, in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin.
This platform, of the FPSO type, a floating production, storage and offloading unit for oil and gas, has a processing potential of up to 180,000 barrels of oil per day and 12 million cubic meters of gas. This amount corresponds to 6% of the production managed by Petrobras, aiming to assist in the increase in production projected by the company. The Mero field corresponds to the third largest oil field in the pre-salt, behind only Búzios and Tupi.
As announced by Petrobras, the platform arrived in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin at the end of January this year. Since then, operations have been conducted to connect it to wells and subsea equipment, as well as some final tests before starting production. Initially, the FPSO will be associated with six producing wells and seven injectors. The expectation is that the platform will reach its highest production rate by the end of the year.
In a statement, the Production Development Director at Petrobras, João Henrique Rittershaussen, stated that the FPSO Guanabara is the most complex oil production unit in operation in Brazil, designed to combine production capacity, efficiency, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. According to him, the installation of a project with this technology is the result of more than ten years of learning in the pre-salt and the integrated work between Petrobras, partners, and suppliers.
New Platform Generates Enough Energy to Supply a City of 330,000 Inhabitants
The weight of the new platform is 102,443 tons, which, for comparison purposes, is equivalent to 258 Boeing 747s. Its height is 172 meters, equivalent to 4.6 Christ the Redeemer statues, and its length is 332 meters, which would cover three football fields. Moreover, it has an energy generation capacity of 100 megawatts, enough to supply a city of 330,000 inhabitants.
The unit, built and operated by Modec, is located more than 150 kilometers off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in water depths reaching 1,930 meters. In addition, three more definitive platforms are expected to come into operation in the Mero field in the horizon of Petrobras’ Strategic Plan 2022-2026.
According to the company, the FPSO Guanabara, located in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, features gas reinjection systems, whereby gas production with a 45% carbon dioxide (CO2) content, after self-consumption on the FPSO, will be completely reinjected into the reservoir to maintain pressure and improve oil recovery, as well as reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. This process will alternate with water injection (Water Alternating Gas – WAG).
FPSO Carioca Becomes Petrobras’ Highest Production Platform: Unit Chartered with Modec in the Pre-Salt of the Santos Basin Reaches 175,000 Barrels of Oil per Day
The FPSO Carioca platform, from the Brazilian giant Petrobras, reaches 175,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), nearing its total production capacity.
Petrobras reported that the fourth producing well interconnected to the FPSO Carioca, in the Sépia field, in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin, has started operations. The opening of the last producing well added 41,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) to the unit – which was already producing 134,000 bpd. With this, it has become the highest production platform of the Brazilian oil company at the moment, with 175,000 bpd.
