Young Lucas Freitas Vieira, 12, Shone in China and Put Brazil in the Spotlight in Cybersecurity with Two Medals in the Competition.

Lucas Freitas Vieira, aged 12, won a gold medal and a bronze medal at the International Cybersecurity Olympiad, held in China, on December 17th.

The result draws attention because it involves an intense competition and puts Brazil in evidence in a rapidly growing field that demands technical preparation from an early age.

The achievement also had a direct impact on the family, who needed help to make the trip possible, after donations gathered the necessary amount for participation.

Gold and Bronze at 12 Put Brazil on the Radar of Global Cybersecurity

The student from the Federal District returned from China with gold and bronze, a rare performance for someone only 12 years old who faced older competitors.

The competition gathered participants aged 11 to 19, which adds weight to the result achieved by Lucas.

In addition to the overall performance, the bronze came in the individual stage, reinforcing the student’s strength outside of group performance.

How He Got to the International Competition

The spot came after Lucas won a silver medal at the National Junior Cybersecurity Olympiad of Singapore (NJCO).

With this ranking, the opportunity arose to represent Brazil in an international competition in China.

Participation was only possible because a chain of support gathered donations to cover the travel costs, as the family did not have sufficient resources.

What the Achievement Represents for Brazil

The victory marked an unprecedented feat: 1st gold medal for Brazil at the International Cybersecurity Olympiad.

The recognition is even greater because Lucas is the only Brazilian involved in the gold result alongside representatives from other countries.

The achievement reinforces Brazil’s presence in a strategic topic, as cybersecurity involves the protection of systems, data, and digital infrastructure.

Who Won the Gold and How the Result Went

The gold was won alongside representatives from Mexico, Indonesia, and Singapore.

Lucas was mentioned as the youngest on the team that won the gold, alongside a student from Mexico, one from Indonesia, and one from Singapore.

The bronze was obtained in the individual competition, highlighting the student’s performance also when evaluated separately.

What Lucas Says About Cybersecurity and the Challenges in the Field

Lucas described the olympiad as very challenging and associated cybersecurity with perceiving flaws and understanding what is behind what people see.

He also pointed out that Brazil has high-level professionals, but is still far from the top in the global scene.

In the student’s view, countries that encourage this type of study from an early age tend to have an easier time accumulating medals, especially in regions like Asia and also in Mexico.

Young Prodigy and Accelerated Study Routine

Lucas is a self-taught pianist and is fluent in Spanish and English, in addition to being interested in astrophysics, quantum physics, and programming.

He started in 2024 the 5th grade and is finishing in 2025 the 8th grade, in an educational advance that is remarkable.

The student also belongs to world associations of high IQ, such as Mensa and Intertel.

The achievement of Lucas Freitas Vieira, aged 12, with gold and bronze in China, reinforces Brazil’s potential in an increasingly decisive area.

In addition to international recognition, the case highlights how encouragement, access to opportunities, and continuity in studies can broaden Brazil’s presence in cybersecurity.

The achievement of such a young Brazilian student in a strategic area like cybersecurity raises important reflections on education, encouragement, and opportunities in the country.
