Ibama Authorizes French Group EDF to Construct Norte Fluminense 2 Thermal Power Plant in Macaé (RJ); About 1800 Jobs Will Be Created in the Municipality
Many jobs are coming for the construction of the Norte Fluminense 2 natural gas thermal power plant. Ibama granted, last Thursday (1/7), the four-year environmental license for the French group Electricité de France (EDF) – owner of the Norte Fluminense 1 plant, which has been in operation since 2004. Another good news for the region is that the Civil construction works in the Açu Port, of the Oil Group modular refinery, are expected to start in July.

With the license in hand, the French company can register the power plant project in a future federal government auction for new energy. If chosen, the company will define the construction schedule for the project.
With an estimated duration of 48 months to complete the construction, the power plant’s works will begin as soon as the installation license is issued by Ibama.

EDF estimates that the jobs will last about four years, and that the construction site will generate 1,100 opportunities during the installation phase, potentially peaking at 1,800 positions.
The project’s scope includes three gas turbines and one steam turbine in a combined cycle; a dedicated gas pipeline of 17.7 km; a water pipeline and effluent discharge of 6.7 km; and a 500kV transmission line, which will connect the Campos 2 Substation (in Campos dos Goytacazes) with the future Lagos Substation (in Rio das Ostras).
Specifications and Curiosities About the Implemented UTE to Be Implemented in Macaé
The Norte Fluminense 2 natural gas thermal power plant in Macaé (RJ) will have a capacity of 1.7 GW. The largest fossil generation agent currently in operation, the Porto de Sergipe I plant, has a granted capacity of 1.5 GW, according to Aneel data.
One of the suppliers for the plant will be the Cabiúnas UPGN, which processes natural gas from the Campos and Santos basins, however the environmental impact report (Rima) presented indicates other alternatives such as pre-salt gas via Rota-2 or a floating LNG regasification terminal at the planned Macaé Port Terminal (Tepor).
To supply the Norte Fluminense 2 plant in Macaé, a gas pipeline will be built from Cabiúnas, within the same easement as the gas pipeline of the Nossa Senhora de Fátima plant, a project of BP and Eneva, which has already been licensed by Ibama.
