Self-Suspending Violations Are the Villains of Traffic: In Addition to Resulting in Immediate Suspension of Your Driver’s License, They Also Have High Fines and Some Are More Common Than You Think. Stay Informed About the 20 Violations That Can Turn Your Journey Into a True Nightmare and Learn How to Avoid Them!
Imagine driving peacefully when, suddenly, a small slip could cost you your license and a lot of money. This is what happens with the so-called self-suspending violations, as outlined in the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). Since April 2021, the point limit for the suspension of the National Driver’s License (CNH) is 40 points. However, if the driver commits serious or very serious violations, this limit can be reduced to 30 or even 20 points, respectively. But what many drivers do not know is that, in addition to accumulating points, there are 20 fines that immediately suspend the CNH without needing a second chance, according to the website Quatro Rodas.
These violations, in addition to having high fines, can occur in everyday situations. Therefore, knowing these fines and understanding how to avoid them is essential for keeping your CNH up to date and your wallet safe.
Self-Suspending Violations: What They Are and How They Work
Self-suspending violations are those that, due to their severity, result in immediate suspension of the CNH, regardless of the points accumulated. In other words, when committing one of these violations, the driver loses the right to drive and may be without their license for a period ranging from two to eight months. Additionally, the cost of these fines is generally high, making the situation even more complicated.

The most expensive of these violations is outlined in Article 253-A of the CTB, which establishes a fine of R$ 17,608.20 for organizing public road interruptions without authorization. The second most expensive, which refers to using one’s own vehicle to disrupt traffic, incurs a fine of R$ 5,869.40. In other words, in addition to losing their CNH, the driver also faces a significant financial penalty.
The Most Frequent Fines and How They Can Catch You Off Guard

Some violations, despite being self-suspending, are relatively easy to commit. Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50% is a classic example. Imagine you are on a road with electronic speed bumps and the maximum allowed speed is 40 km/h. If, by chance, you exceed this by driving at 64 km/h, your CNH could be suspended, and the fine will be R$ 880.41. This may seem little, but it is enough to compromise your license for up to eight months.
Another example pertains to driving under the influence. Refusing to take a breathalyzer test or driving under the influence of alcohol leads to immediate suspension of the CNH and incurs a fine of R$ 2,934.70. And it’s no use trying to “make excuses” to avoid the breathalyzer, because a simple refusal is already sufficient grounds to lose your license.
Motorcyclists Also Need to Stay Alert: Specific Violations for Two Wheels
Motorcyclists are not exempt from the list of self-suspending violations. There are four specific violations for motorcycle riders that also lead to immediate suspension of the CNH, all with a fine of R$ 293.47. These include riding without a helmet, carrying a passenger without a helmet, performing stunts, or balancing on one wheel. The intention here is clear: to ensure safety on the road, especially on a vehicle as vulnerable as a motorcycle.
Tips to Avoid Fines and Keep Your CNH Intact

Now that you know what the self-suspending violations are and the fines they represent, it’s time to understand how to avoid them. The first tip is to always respect speed limits and traffic signs. It may seem obvious, but most fines result from inattention or haste while driving.
Another important point is not to mix alcohol and driving. If you are going to drink, leave the car at home and use alternative transportation. Additionally, always be attentive to the condition of your vehicle and do not try to “find a way” to evade supervision, such as with road interruptions.
Finally, remember that education in traffic is the best way to avoid fines and ensure everyone’s safety. Driving responsibly not only avoids headaches but also protects your CNH and your wallet.
