Study Shows That Maintenance of Electric Cars After Collisions Remains High, With Costs That Can Reach R$ 31,680

Electric cars, which recently were an exciting novelty in the automotive market, are now facing a maturing phase. With the increase in the number of these vehicles on the streets, there is also a new challenge for owners: the high maintenance costs. A recent study conducted by Mitchell, an American company specializing in the automotive sector, revealed that repairs for electric cars after collisions are, on average, 20% more expensive than for combustion vehicles.

Growth in Demand for Repairs on Electric Vehicles

As more electric cars enter circulation, the demand for maintenance also increases. According to the study, the demand for repairs on electric vehicles damaged in collisions increased by 2.5% in the United States and 3.95% in Canada during the second quarter of 2024. This increase occurs at a time when the market share of electric vehicles showed a decline of 9.3% in the first quarter of 2024 and 10.2% in the third quarter of 2023 in the U.S.

High Costs Compared to Combustion Vehicles

Mitchell’s study revealed that the average costs to repair an electric car after a collision in the United States reached US$ 5,753 (equivalent to R$ 31,680) in the second half of 2024. In Canada, the amount was 6,534 Canadian dollars (about R$ 26,690). In contrast, combustion vehicles had average repair costs of US$ 4,806 (R$ 26,460) in the U.S. and 4,958 Canadian dollars (R$ 20,230) in Canada.

These numbers clearly show that repairs on electric cars were 20% more expensive in the United States and 31% more expensive in Canada compared to similarly sized combustion vehicles. This cost difference can be attributed to the technological complexity of electric vehicles, which require more specialized parts and procedures.

Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Top Repair Frequency

Among the brands and models most frequently involved in repairs after collisions, the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y lead, accounting for half of the registered cases. This is not surprising, given the popularity of these models on American and Canadian roads.

In addition to pure electric vehicles, the frequency of repairs also increased for hybrids in general. However, there is a significant difference in maintenance costs among hybrid types. Mild hybrids, which share more technical characteristics with combustion vehicles, have similar repair costs. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids, which are more complex, have a maintenance cost that is 12.5% higher.
