Plant Will Expand the Use of Co-Products from the Poultry and Swine Production Chain. During the Construction Phase, Around 400 Jobs Will Be Created
Focusing on job creation, Seara Alimentos, a subsidiary of JBS, will invest R$ 180 million in the construction of a biodiesel plant in Santa Catarina, with operations expected to begin in 2021, the world’s largest meat producer announced on July 30. JBS’s third biodiesel unit will use raw materials such as poultry and swine fats, resources abundant in the state where the company has major meat production units.
In the other two biodiesel factories of the group, in Lins (SP) and Campo Verde (MT), where JBS’s beef operations are stronger, bovine tallow is the predominant raw material in biodiesel production.

The new JBS Biodiesel unit in Mafra (SC) will more than double the company’s production capacity, which is expected to exceed 600 million liters/year, JBS stated.
The plant may also use soy as a raw material, the company said, referring to the main input for biodiesel production in the country, where legislation requires a 10% blend of biofuel in diesel.
Only in Santa Catarina, JBS operates more than 30 Seara facilities in 18 municipalities, creating job opportunities across poultry, swine, processed products, feed factories, and more.
Optimistic Sector Outlook for Job Creation
The company’s bet on a new operation also considers the optimistic outlook for the sector.
“By 2023, under the RenovaBio program, the biodiesel blend in diesel will reach 15% with the introduction of B15”, explained JBS Biodiesel director Alexandre Pereira in a statement to Reuters.
With the third unit, JBS Biodiesel will strengthen its position among the top ten biodiesel producers in the country after having increased its sales by 25% in 2018, reaching 260 million liters.
JBS emphasized that Mafra has efficient logistics for loading and unloading via rail and road, in addition to being 120 km from Araucária (PR), where the Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery (Repar) is located, one of the main units for blending and distributing diesel in the country.
