Extrabom Network Expands 5×2 Shift After Tests with Over 90% Approval and Plans to Benefit Over 5,000 Employees in Units in Espírito Santo
The Coutinho Group announced this Thursday (12) the expansion of the 5×2 shift in units of the Extrabom network, after tests with an approval rate exceeding 90%. The change is expected to benefit over 5,000 employees in Espírito Santo.
Expansion of the 5×2 Shift in the Extrabom Network
The announcement was made by the Coutinho Group, responsible for the Extrabom network. The company stated that the new schedule will gradually replace the traditional 6×1 model in most units.
The change has already gone through a testing period considered positive by the company. The measure is expected to reach over 5,000 workers under the Extrabom, Atacado Vem, Extra Plus, and Extracenter brands.

Pilot Stores and Approval Over 90%
During a press conference, the group’s CEO, Luiz Coutinho, stated that three stores participated in the initial phase of the change.
The selected units were Laranjeiras in Serra, Gaivotas in Vila Velha, and Vila Rubim in Vitória. According to the executive, internal acceptance exceeded 90%.
According to Coutinho, the company observed an increase in employee satisfaction. He stated that the adoption of the 5×2 shift aims to improve the quality of life and make the work environment more attractive.
New Schedule Maintains 44 Weekly Hours
The transition to the new model began in January of this year. Despite the change in the distribution of days off, the weekly workload remains at 44 hours.
With the new arrangement, employees have daily shifts of 8 hours and 48 minutes. This format ensures two days of weekly rest within the new 5×2 shift.
According to the group, the change aims to reorganize shifts without altering the total hours worked. Thus, the weekly rest now includes two days.
Impact on the Employee Count
The company reported that the change required a limited increase in the staff count. The estimated increase ranges from 2% to 3%.
This cost will be absorbed by the group itself. In some units, the reorganization of schedules was carried out without the need for new hires.
For employees working in the pilot stores, the effects of the new schedule are already noticeable. Arnaldo Schulz, a cashier in Laranjeiras, stated that the additional rest improves motivation at work.
National Debate on Work Hours
The decision comes amid a national debate on the proposal known as the end of the 6×1 shift. The topic is being discussed in a constitutional amendment addressing the reduction of work hours in the country.
According to Luiz Coutinho, the 5×2 shift is feasible within the current limit of 44 weekly hours. However, he assessed that a legal reduction to 40 hours would require a 10% increase in the employee count.
This scenario, according to the executive, could impact final prices. The company also reported that it currently has around 300 job openings.
The group’s expectation is to gradually expand the new model to other units of the network throughout 2026, consolidating the replacement of the old 6×1 shift.
