A new underground station, located 140 meters deep, has captured the world’s attention and turned into a unique experience for thousands of visitors. In one of the most populous cities on the planet, a simple subway ride has become a surprising crossing: to reach the platform, passengers must descend more than 100 meters via a seemingly endless series of escalators.

The journey can take between 7 and 8 minutes, enough time to grasp the scale of a work that redefines the limits of modern engineering.

The Deepest Subway Station in the World

The record holder is Hongyancun, a station on Line 9 of the Chongqing Metro in China, recognized by the specialized portal World Atlas as the deepest on the planet. Inaugurated in 2022, its construction represented an extreme challenge and also a strategic solution to the region’s complex geography: Chongqing is a megacity surrounded by mountains and cut by two major rivers, which forced engineers to excavate tunnels under severe geological conditions.

The elevation difference between its two access points reaches 141 meters, equivalent to a building of nearly 50 stories. Therefore, the movement to the platform is made via eight escalators connected to long moving walkways that transport users into the depths of the structure.

This journey, which can last up to 8 minutes, becomes part of the experience: soft lights, granite-clad walls, and the air getting cooler as you descend create a unique atmosphere underground.

What the Station Located More Than 100 Meters Deep Is Like

Hongyancun has six main entrances, designed to distribute passenger flow and facilitate evacuation in case of emergency. Even more than 100 meters underground, the station operates with an advanced ventilation system and an earthquake-resistant structure capable of ensuring tunnel safety in a region marked by uneven terrain.

Chongqing, with more than 30 million inhabitants, needed a transportation network capable of connecting elevated areas to the valleys where much of the population is concentrated. The station has become a symbol of Chinese development and a testament to the technical level achieved by engineering in the country.

Another Station More Than 100 Meters Deep

Before Hongyancun, the world record belonged to the Arsenalna station in the Kiev Metro in Ukraine. Opened in 1960, it is located at a depth of 105.5 meters and was built this way due to the city’s topography, which rises along the banks of the Dnipro River.

For more than six decades, it was considered an icon of Soviet engineering and one of the most complex underground infrastructures of its time.
