The Defense Specialist Andrei Ferbin Pont Emphasizes Brazilian Superiority in the Military Sector, Highlighting How the Strategic Partnership for the Production of the Gripen Fighters and the Global Protagonism of Embraer Have Transformed Brazil into an Industrial Power That Arouses Admiration and Surprise Among Argentinian Neighbors.

Brazil has heavily invested in modernizing its military air fleet, especially with the recent acquisition of Gripen fighter jets.

Brazil’s investment in the fighters is not just a technological update but also a manifestation of the country’s growing self-sufficiency in terms of defense and aircraft production.

The defense specialist Andrei Ferbin Pont, in his analysis on the Argentine channel INFOBAE, detailed the importance of this purchase and the impact of Brazil’s defense industry, especially considering the relevance of companies like Embraer, which leads part of the local manufacturing project for the Gripen.

Ferbin pointed out that, while Brazil aimed to acquire 36 aircraft, 15 of them will be produced locally, ensuring a significant transfer of technology and development of industrial capacity in the country.

The Strategy of Modernization of Brazilian Military Aviation

The Gripen acquisition project took on the contours of a true national strategy when Brazil not only purchased aircraft but also sought to actively participate in the production process.

The goal was clear: to build an aerospace portfolio capable of competing with major powers in the defense sector, focusing on creating a national production infrastructure.

Brazilians did not just want to buy the Gripen, but to be partners in the production and development of the aircraft,” explained Ferbin Pont.

The contract, signed in 2014, involved an amount of 5.4 billion dollars and included the transfer of technology so that Brazil could, in addition to manufacturing the aircraft, become self-sufficient in terms of maintenance and future upgrades of its fleets.

However, Brazil’s economic situation led to some delays in the delivery of the aircraft. The original delivery plan for 2024 was extended to 2032, reflecting both the financial crisis the country went through and the difficulties in meeting the initially established deadlines and budgets.

Embraer and Collaboration with Other Countries in the Region

Another point highlighted in Ferbin Pont’s analysis was the crucial role of Embraer, the Brazilian aviation giant, in manufacturing military and commercial aircraft.

Embraer has been one of the main companies responsible for producing combat aircraft such as the KC-390, a next-generation military cargo plane, and other models of commercial aircraft that serve markets worldwide.

Ferbin also spoke about the collaboration between Embraer and the Argentine Aircraft Factory (FAdeA), which resulted in the joint production of aircraft components, such as those used in the KC-390. “Despite all the financial difficulties Brazil faces, Embraer continues to be a success story within the global aerospace industry,” he stated.

In the regional context, Brazil stood out as the only country in Latin America capable of producing its own combat aircraft. However, this advantage has also created tensions with its neighbors.

Argentina, for example, expressed interest in acquiring the Gripen, but faced a technical obstacle: the presence of British components in the aircraft, which generated a diplomatic impasse and questions about the viability of an agreement.

The Challenge of Costs and Competition in Latin America

Another relevant aspect of the Gripen purchase was the comparative analysis with other countries in the region. The specialist pointed out that Brazil paid a relatively low price for the aircraft, considering the high production costs and the benefits of being able to manufacture them locally.

The purchase of 36 Gripen for Brazil was made for an average value of 150 million dollars per unit. This value is significantly lower than what Colombia paid for used F16 aircraft, which cost around 300 million dollars each.

However, Colombia’s case is equally complex. The South American nation signed a contract with Saab, the Gripen manufacturer, for the acquisition of aircraft at an even higher price.

Moreover, Colombia will not have the advantage of local aircraft production, which means the country will have to rely on imports to maintain its fleet of combat aircraft.

The Impact on Regional Military Balance

With the advancement of the Gripen program, Brazil has consolidated its position as a leader in military aircraft production in Latin America.

Ferbin Pont emphasized that the Brazilian defense industry is becoming one of the most independent in the region, with the capacity to develop and export a wide range of products, including submarines, frigates, armored vehicles, and ammunition.

Brazil, therefore, not only seeks to improve its own defense capability but also becomes one of the largest exporters of military technology in the world.

However, the regional situation continues to evolve, with Argentina and Colombia seeking alternatives to modernize their air fleets.

The resistance of other countries to purchasing Brazilian aircraft, however, reflects the complex geopolitical and economic issues in the region.

The development of a self-sufficient defense industry and the local production of military equipment, such as the Gripen, can be a significant strategic advantage for Brazil, but it also intensifies disputes between neighboring countries.

Brazil’s acquisition of the Gripen and its pursuit of self-sufficiency in the defense sector represent a milestone in the history of the Latin American aerospace industry.

Brazil’s ability to develop, produce, and export its own combat aircraft places the country in a privileged position in the global arena.

However, economic challenges and regional tensions still present significant obstacles. As Andrei Ferbin Pont stated, “Brazil is building a solid defense foundation, but there is still much work to be done to consolidate this military power in Latin America.”
