At 85, Cleide Lives Alone, Travels the World, and Goes Viral with a Powerful Message About Independence, Autonomy, and Joy in Old Age — Representing a Brazil That Ages Without Asking for Permission

On September 17, 2025, the portal Só Notícia Boa published a report that drew attention across the country: the story of Cleide Almeida, an educator, senior model, and content creator, who at 85 years old, lives alone, travels frequently, maintains her own routine, and goes viral with videos encouraging more seniors to live with autonomy and joy. Other outlets, such as iG Turismo, echoed the same narrative days later, highlighting that she travels alone and gains thousands of followers by showcasing a lifestyle that contradicts traditional views of old age.

The report from Só Notícia Boa already made clear the impact: Cleide not only lives alone, she makes a point to show that it is possible to age without depending on children, spouses, or caregivers, and without giving up basic pleasures such as traveling, dining out, having friends, making memories, and learning new things.

Independence as Choice and as a Banner: “I Travel Because It Does Me Good”

In interviews and videos, Cleide always emphasizes that she does not age trying to appear young, but lives as a full adult, entitled to her own decisions, mistakes, successes, and new experiences.

She has stated that traveling alone is “liberating” and that she learns more about herself each time she faces an airport, a hotel, or an unknown itinerary.

According to the report, Cleide insists on paying for her own travels, organizing her itineraries, and managing her routine without intermediaries. She has lived alone since before she turned 80 and has adopted technology as a tool, not as an obstacle; she uses a cell phone, social networks, and digital services like any younger person.

The most important detail: independence is a choice, not an imposition. She has family, but she maintains her lifestyle because she enjoys it, because it makes her feel good, and because she does not believe that aging needs to be synonymous with reduction, limitation, or permanent guardianship.

The Impact on Social Media: A Community That Identifies and a Country That Is Changing

By showcasing her travels, restaurants, photo shoots, walks, and humorous videos, Cleide has gone viral naturally.

The audience that follows her is not just composed of seniors: many young people comment that they want to “age like her” and that it is the first time they see someone over 80 occupying space with lightness and prominence on social media.

This does not happen by chance, Brazil is changing.

According to IBGE, the country will double the number of people over 60 in the coming decades and, for the first time, a generation is emerging that does not want to be pushed inside the house as they age.

Cleide has become a symbol of this transition because she shows, in practice, that there are other possible narratives for old age beyond dependence and social isolation.

Living Alone at 85: Autonomy, Security, and Structure

Living alone at this age is not common in Brazil, but it is becoming less of an exception. According to IBGE, the number of one-person households in the country has already surpassed 11 million, with significant growth among the elderly.

Cleide’s case fits this scenario by showing that it is possible:

  • To live alone and maintain an organized routine
  • To travel alone and make choices
  • To consume and move around the city
  • To produce content
  • To use technology
  • To maintain an active social life

The home where she lives is adapted, comfortable, well-located, and allows her to perform tasks without depending on others. This combination — autonomy + accessibility + self-esteem — forms the tripod of active urban aging.

The Other Side of This Story: The Construction of a New Old Age in Brazil

The impact of Cleide’s case goes beyond going viral. It reveals a country where:

  • Women live longer than men
  • Seniors control a significant part of the family income
  • Seniors are digitalizing faster
  • Seniors want to consume, travel, learn, and be active

And most importantly: they do not want to be infantilized.

Cleide has become an icon because she translates a phrase that many seniors think but do not say openly:
“I still have time, I still have curiosity, and I still have desire.”

Why This Story Matters and Why It Went Viral

The virality did not come merely from the image of an elderly lady traveling. It came from breaking expectations. Common sense expects that at 85, someone is:

  • Retired
  • Homebound
  • Dependent
  • Limited
  • Inactive
  • Without ambitions

Cleide subverts all of this. She studies, works as a model, creates content, travels, takes photos of herself, takes care of herself, enjoys herself, and chooses how she lives. In a culture that rarely represents seniors with autonomy, she offers what was missing: a real reference.

One Last Layer: Cleide Is Not an Isolated Case, but a Sign of the Times

Aging in Brazil is in transition.
The generation that is reaching 70, 80, and 90 years:

  • Traveled
  • Studied
  • Worked
  • Lived in cities
  • Had access to technology
  • Does not want to give up their own identity

Cleide represents this historic turning point.

And that’s why her story matters so much: because it shows that old age is not the end of life; it is just another stage of it. Full of autonomy, personality, choices, and a future.
