The Bahia Government Invests R$ 196 Million in the Construction of BA-649, a New Roadway with 18 Km, Including Four Bridges and a Viaduct, Promising to Improve Traffic and Connect Strategic Cities
Bahia is about to inaugurate an important roadway infrastructure that promises to transform mobility in the southern coastal region of the state. This is the new BA-649 roadway, which will have a length of 18 km, four bridges, and a viaduct, directly connecting the municipalities of Ilhéus and Itabuna, two strategic hubs in southern Bahia. With an estimated investment of R$ 196 million, the project aims to alleviate traffic on the current BR-415 and drive regional development.
The new roadway is expected to directly benefit around 380,000 residents of the municipalities of Ilhéus and Itabuna, helping to improve the flow of transportation for goods, passengers, and tourists along the southern coastline of Bahia.
New Roadway with 18 Km of Extension Will Facilitate Traffic and Boost Development
The construction of the 18 km roadway represents a strategic advancement for southern Bahia. Currently, the primary access between Ilhéus and Itabuna is via BR-415, a single-lane road that frequently experiences congestion, accidents, and wear, especially during peak times and holidays.

The new BA-649 roadway will be a modern, safe, and efficient alternative, running along the Rio Cachoeira with a dual lane. The project includes four bridges over the river, in addition to a viaduct that will connect the neighborhoods of Hernani Sá and Nossa Senhora da Vitória in Ilhéus. This configuration will allow for more continuous traffic, significantly reducing travel time.
According to the state government, the expectation is that the new corridor will reduce travel time between the two cities by up to 30%, as well as contribute to accident reduction, improvements in regional logistics, and encouragement of tourism along the southern coast.
Investment of R$ 196 Million Marks a New Phase of Road Infrastructure in Bahia
The total investment planned for the construction of BA-649 is R$ 196 million, carried out by the Government of Bahia to enhance the roadway infrastructure between Ilhéus and Itabuna, including 18 km of roadway, four bridges, and a viaduct.
Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues emphasized that the new BA-649 roadway represents a significant advancement in the state’s infrastructure, aiming to improve connectivity between Ilhéus and Itabuna and boost regional development.
The concession was won by SVC Construções Ltda and Paviservice Serviços de Pavimentação Ltda, which will be responsible for the construction under a sponsored concession regime. The project also includes the implementation of shoulders, modern signage, public lighting in urban areas, and drainage devices.
Four Bridges and a Viaduct Will Bring Greater Safety and Fluidity to Traffic
One of the major distinguishing features of the new roadway will be the set of four bridges and a viaduct along the route. These structures will allow crossings over the Rio Cachoeira and densely populated urban areas, avoiding dangerous intersections and level crossings.
Among the bridges, the main one stands out, which will have a significant length to support the traffic of light and heavy vehicles, contributing to the flow of essential cargo for the region. The viaduct will play an important role in connecting strategic neighborhoods in Ilhéus, facilitating access and urban movement for the local population.
In addition to improving mobility, the new structure is expected to contribute to increasing road safety in the region, with exclusive lanes, speed reducers in critical points, and monitoring systems with cameras along the roadway.
The Project Will Benefit Tourism, Local Economy, and the Flow of Agricultural Production
The direct connection between Ilhéus and Itabuna provided by the 18 km-long roadway is expected to boost various sectors of the regional economy. The cocoa region, for instance, heavily depends on road transportation for the flow of agricultural production. The new roadway will facilitate this process, especially for producers exporting goods through the Port of Ilhéus.
Tourism will also benefit from better access to the beaches of Ilhéus, Jorge Amado Airport, and the cultural hubs of the region. This should attract more visitors to the southern coastline, strengthening local commerce, hospitality, and services.
Additionally, the new roadway will more efficiently integrate transportation systems, bringing the urban area of Itabuna closer to the coastal zone of Ilhéus, which tends to enhance the quality of life for the local population and generate new business opportunities.
Urban Mobility and Environmental Preservation Are Part of the Project in Bahia
Despite the significant territorial intervention, the project for the new roadway was developed with detailed environmental studies. The executing company obtained environmental licenses from the Institute of Environment and Water Resources (Inema), ensuring that the works meet sustainability criteria and protect natural resources.
Sediment containment barriers, drainage systems to prevent sedimentation of the Rio Cachoeira, and measures for the recovery of native vegetation in impacted areas will be implemented. The installation of wildlife crossings at strategic points is also planned to minimize the impact on local biodiversity.
These actions comply with current environmental legislation and reflect the commitment of the Bahia government to sustainable and responsible infrastructure, a priority in major state public works.
New Roadway Boosts Connectivity, Safety, and Regional Development in Bahia
The construction of the new roadway BA-649, with 18 km of extension, four bridges, and one viaduct, represents a milestone in the roadway infrastructure of southern Bahia. With a robust investment of R$ 196 million, the project promises to unlock traffic between Ilhéus and Itabuna, generate jobs, promote tourism, facilitate agricultural flow, and improve urban mobility.
More than just a road, BA-649 symbolizes a new cycle of regional development based on connectivity, road safety, and environmental sustainability. The project reinforces the role of the State of Bahia as a protagonist in structural works that transform the reality of its strategic regions.
With completion expected in the coming months, the hope is that the roadway will become a reference in mobility in the interior of Brazil, contributing to a more efficient and connected future for the entire population of southern Bahia.
