Recycling Plant Will Reach Production of 250 Million Plastic Packaging Annually for Braskem
As a global leader in the production of biopolymers at an industrial scale, Braskem has taken a big step towards its goal of expanding its range of products derived from plastic recycling, aiming to achieve 1 million tons of recycled materials by 2030.
This goal of Braskem refers to the inauguration of the first recycling unit in Indaiatuba (SP), a result of a partnership between Braskem and Valoren, a company that develops technology and manages waste for conversion into recycled products.
Braskem’s new factory, with an investment of 67 million reais, was inaugurated in March of this year, covering a construction area of 9,000 square meters and employing over 150 people.

The new Braskem unit will be capable of converting 250 million plastic packages annually, after their consumption, made from polyethylene and polypropylene, substances found in cleaning materials, personal care, cosmetics, and food, into 14,000 tons of high-quality post-consumer recycled resin.
In the new unit, the resins will be reused as raw materials by the industry and will reach consumers through new products, such as furniture, secondary packaging, gardening items, and paint, etc.

Plastic Products That the Unit Will Recycle
The recycling plant in Indaiatuba, resulting from the partnership between Braskem and Valoren, primarily transforms plastic waste from domestic sources, such as food packaging, cleaning materials, personal hygiene products, and cosmetics.
Technology of the New Unit in the Recycling Process
The technological aspect was one of the major challenges of the new project. The recycling line consists of a modular complex that integrates different stages and is developed using Braskem’s proprietary technology. The plastic waste placed at the beginning of the production line is shredded, washed, and homogenized.
The layout of the plastic recycling project is unique, and the machines use the most advanced technology from Europe, complemented by domestic equipment.
Among the main differentiators of the first recycling plant are the high-performance washing lines with optical detectors for the removal of contaminants by color and type of material, homogenization silos, high-precision additives, and input dosing systems and odor elimination, along with high-performance polymer filtration, helping to improve the quality of the resulting plastic.
“Moreover, we could not build a recycling plant for plastic without considering, beyond individual safety, the best sustainability practices in its infrastructure. Given these aspects, we carried out water recirculation treatment to optimize water and energy resources.”
Braskem’s Goals With the New Plastic Recycling Unit
Braskem’s objective, validated by the board of directors, is to achieve 1 million tons of recycled products by 2030. In addition to this goal, Braskem also aims to be globally recognized as an industry that strengthens the recycling value chain in the regions where it operates and to be a leader in recycling across the Americas.
To meet these goals, Braskem intends to operate through partnerships with other companies to strengthen recycling, as well as educate and raise awareness in society about the proper disposal of plastics, conscious consumption, and the importance of the recycling process.
The inauguration of the new plastic recycling unit by Braskem is one of several actions by the company to meet its goals, which will be announced in the coming months of 2022.
