Brazil’s GDP Rises 0.1% in Q3 and Shows Deceleration, Says IBGE. Economy Loses Momentum After Revisions of Previous Quarters.

Brazil’s GDP rises 0.1% in Q3 and shows deceleration, says IBGE, according to data released this Thursday (4) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics.

The survey shows what: a loss of momentum in the economy;

who: IBGE, responsible for the analysis;

when: in the third quarter;

where: throughout the national territory;

how: based on the official calculation of Gross Domestic Product;

And why: due to the revisions of the previous quarters and the behavior of the productive sectors.

The performance fell short of market expectations, which projected a larger variation, indicating a scenario of deceleration after months of more intense recovery.

Modest Growth Raises Alarm Among Analysts

According to IBGE, the Gross Domestic Product had an increase of only 0.1% compared to the second quarter.

The result contrasts with the previous high of 0.4% and reinforces the perception that the country has lost steam in economic expansion.

In addition, the market expected growth of 0.2%, which places the actual performance slightly below projections, although it does not represent a contraction.

Brazil’s GDP Rises 0.1% in Q3 and Shows Deceleration, Says IBGE: Total Values

IBGE reported that the GDP totaled R$ 3.2 trillion between July and September.

Of this total, R$ 2.7 trillion corresponds to the value added at basic prices, reflecting the direct production of economic sectors.

R$ 449.3 billion refer to taxes on products net of subsidies.

This breakdown reinforces the structure of the official calculation and helps to understand where the recorded variations in the quarter come from.

Annual Comparison Indicates Stronger Growth

Even with deceleration in the quarter, IBGE highlighted that in comparison with the same period in 2024, the GDP grew 1.8%, surpassing the expectation of 1.7%.

The annual data shows that the Brazilian economy maintained a positive trajectory, albeit at an irregular pace.

This better-than-expected performance occurs because the first two quarters of the year were revised upward, which changed the overall reading for 2025.

Year Revisions Improve Accumulated Scenario

IBGE revised the growth of the first quarter from 2.9% to 3.1% and the second quarter from 2.2% to 2.4%.

These updates reinforce that the recent deceleration does not negate the strong performance observed at the beginning of the year.

According to the institute, the agricultural sector played a decisive role in these revisions, boosting the accumulated result for the year and compensating for the loss of momentum recorded in the third quarter.

Agriculture Positively Influences but Does Not Prevent Deceleration

Agriculture, which historically has a strong impact on GDP, contributed to raise the numbers of the previous quarters.

However, even with good performance, the economy as a whole showed signs of exhaustion in the most recent period.

Thus, the collective of productive sectors could not maintain the pace, leading to a scenario where Brazil’s GDP rises 0.1% in Q3 and shows deceleration, says IBGE.

Expectations for the Coming Months

Economists are now monitoring the upcoming indicators to understand whether the deceleration will be temporary or if it represents a trend.

The approach of the end of the year, household consumption behavior, and international market movements will be decisive factors.

Despite the modest result, the country still accumulates growth for the year and maintains a prospect of closing 2025 in the positive field, provided it does not face additional shocks.
