First Green Hydrogen Plant Receives Important Certification for Sector Advancement. The Plant Has Capacity to Produce 100 kg of Fuel per Day.

Last week, the green hydrogen production plant installed at the Itumbiara hydroelectric plant (UHE), located on the Paranaíba River, between Araporã, in Triângulo Mineiro, and Itumbiara, Goiás, received certification from the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) at an event held at Eletrobras headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

Green Hydrogen Plant Will Have Capacity to Produce About 100 kg/Day

The document confirms that green hydrogen is produced from renewable sources. In Itumbiara, the plant operated by Eletrobras Furnas produces hydrogen through the electrolysis process, utilizing hydropower and photovoltaic energy. According to Eletrobras, the green hydrogen plant in Itumbiara was the first to become operational in Brazil.

Currently, the cumulative production since the commissioning of the unit in 2021 exceeds three tons of green hydrogen. The production capacity is approximately 100 kg per day. Seen as the fuel of the future, green hydrogen is emerging globally as a leading energy bet today, due to being considered clean energy and having zero carbon emissions.

According to the CCEE, the certification process pertains to the voluntary market, where buyers define the rules to evaluate the sustainability criteria for hydrogen, following European standards.

The green hydrogen certificate was launched by the Chamber in December of last year to attest to the origin of production from zero carbon emission sources in pilot projects in the country. Alexandre Ramos, president of the Chamber, emphasizes that the certification is a pioneering initiative that will guarantee customers the purchase of a truly sustainable product.

The Green Hydrogen Plant

In addition to the operation of Eletrobras Furnas, the CCEE issued certification for renewable hydrogen produced in Brazil by DP at the Pecém Thermoelectric Complex in São Gonçalo do Amarante, Ceará, using solar energy. Both companies will use the clean fuel for testing in their own facilities.

The units were installed as part of the Research & Development program of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel). This partnership with the companies is a crucial step in developing a trust relationship with investors in the Brazilian renewable hydrogen market, aiming to ensure the country’s leadership in global efforts focused on energy transition.

The green hydrogen plant UHE Itumbiara was installed in December 2021, when tests and analyses of hydrogen production and storage, its reconversion into electric energy, and the insertion of this energy into the National Interconnected System (SIN) began. Of the energy consumed in production, part is generated from the 800 Wp photovoltaic plant installed next to the green hydrogen system, and part comes from the hydroelectric plant. For Eletrobras, the hybrid nature and the combination of these two renewable sources are the strengths of the project.

Advancements in the Brazilian Green Hydrogen Market

ArcelorMittal Tubarão and EDP signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this month to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a pilot plant for the production and use of green hydrogen in the steel manufacturing process.

This initiative is part of ArcelorMittal Tubarão’s efforts to boost low-carbon steel production and EDP’s efforts to expand green hydrogen production using the company’s experience, which was a pioneer in producing the first green hydrogen molecule in Latin America last December.
