Founded in 1532, São Vicente was the first village of Brazil, gathered city council, justice, and elections, began effective colonization, and today preserves historical monuments on the paulista coast

The oldest city in Brazil is located on the coast of São Paulo and carries a historical weight that goes far beyond its beach landscape. São Vicente was officially founded on January 22, 1532, by Martim Afonso de Sousa and is recognized as the Cellula Mater of nationality, an expression that summarizes its central role in the formation of Brazil.

It was there that a complete political organization was established for the first time in the Portuguese Americas, with a city council, justice system, and administrative autonomy.

Why São Vicente Has This Historical Title

Despite there being other stopping points on the coast before 1532, São Vicente was the first locality to receive the legal title of Village. This meant much more than just a simple settlement.

The installation of councilors, a Pillory, and a formal administrative model represented the consolidation of the Portuguese presence in the territory.

From there, the colonization process took on a definitive form, ceasing to be merely exploratory.

It was in São Vicente that the first sugar mill in Brazil emerged, the Engenho dos Erasmos, a fundamental economic landmark for the colonial period.

It was also in the village that the first elections in the Americas occurred, reinforcing its political pioneering.

These events symbolize the transition of the Portuguese strategy, which previously was limited to the extraction of brazilwood, to an effective and lasting occupation of the territory.

The Confusion with Other Historical Cities

There’s often confusion regarding cities like Cananéia and Salvador. Cananéia is frequently cited as the oldest for having been founded in 1531, but at that time, it did not receive the official status of Village.

Salvador, on the other hand, was founded in 1549 and became the first capital of Brazil, serving as the seat of the General Government. However, it was not the first locality with a formal administrative structure.

This distinction helps to understand the different titles. Cananéia has chronological precedence as a settlement, São Vicente possesses the legal legitimacy of a village, and Salvador carries the political prominence of a planned city and capital.

Each had a specific role, but it is São Vicente that marks the institutional beginning of the country.

The Oldest City on the Coast of São Paulo: What to Visit in the Cradle of History

Today, São Vicente is part of the Baixada Santista and combines urban life with beaches and historical landmarks. Among the most visited sites are the Pênsil Bridge, inaugurated in 1914, the Biquinha de Anchieta, the Marco Padrão, and the Casa Martim Afonso.

The Praia dos Milionários draws attention for its calm and shallow waters, being quite sought after by families.

The City Today

Currently, São Vicente functions as a dormitory city, strongly connected to Santos and Praia Grande.

Despite having suffered from unplanned growth over the decades, it preserves its historical charm in the center and along the shores of Itararé and Gonzaguinha.

For those coming from São Paulo, access via the Anchieta-Imigrantes System takes about 50 minutes, making the destination an accessible, cultural, and meaningful option for a weekend.
