The oldest city in Brazil is located on the coast of São Paulo and carries a historical weight that goes far beyond its beach landscape. Salvador, on the other hand, was founded in 1549 and became the first capital of Brazil, serving as the seat of the General Government. However, it was not the first locality with a formal administrative structure.
This distinction helps to understand the different titles. Cananéia has chronological precedence as a settlement, São Vicente possesses the legal legitimacy of a village, and Salvador carries the political prominence of a planned city and capital.
Each had a specific role, but it is São Vicente that marks the institutional beginning of the country.
