According to ANP Data, Brazil Registered a Record in Oil Production in October, Driven by Pre-Salt and the Expansion of Natural Gas. See the Numbers and the Impact on the Energy Sector.

Oil production in Brazil has surprised again. According to preliminary data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the country reached a new historical record for combined oil and natural gas production in October.

The numbers reinforce the strength of the pre-salt and show that the industry continues to expand, even in a global scenario of challenges and energy transition.

Strong Growth Drives the National Record

In October, the total volume reached 5.248 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d). This level surpasses the previous record, which had been registered in July, when the country produced 5.160 million boe/d. Moreover, compared to September, there was an increase of 2.7%, highlighting the continuation of the high extraction pace.

When looking only at oil, the country produced 4.024 million barrels daily. The increase was 2.9% compared to the previous month. Concurrently, natural gas production reached 194.5 million cubic meters per day, representing a 2.2% increase compared to the previous month.

Pre-Salt Expands Share and Sustains Production Growth

Another important highlight is the growing weight of the pre-salt. The region accounted for 81.42% of all national production in October, up from 81.1% recorded in September. In total, the pre-salt delivered 4.273 million boe/d, an increase of 3.2% in the monthly comparison.

When analyzing only the oil derived from the pre-salt, production reached 3.306 million barrels per day, a figure 3.11% higher than that of September. Meanwhile, the natural gas extracted from this area reached 153.6 million cubic meters per day, with a 3.6% expansion during the same period.

What Does BOE Mean and Why is It Used in the Industry?

To understand the significance of these numbers, it is essential to comprehend the concept of BOE — Barrel of Oil Equivalent. It is a unit used to compare different energy sources, as each one delivers varying amounts of energy per volume or mass.

Thus, 1 BOE corresponds approximately to the energy contained in:

  • 1 Barrel of Oil (159 Liters)
  • 5.8 Million BTU
  • About 1.7 MWh
  • Approximately 159 m³ of Natural Gas (with possible variations depending on composition and country)

This metric facilitates economic analysis and reporting, in addition to allowing the unified summation of oil and gas production, which is essential for planning and assessing the country’s energy reserves.
