Modular Factory of Fontes Verdes in Rio Grande Is Under State Validation, Expected to Produce 4,000 Annual Tons of Green Ammonia, Create Local Jobs, and Start Operating in the First Half of 2026
About to receive a new project related to the energy transition, the Industrial District of Rio Grande may host a modular green ammonia factory from Fontes Verdes, with the start expected in the second half of 2026, a historic milestone for the state.
Project Evaluation and Initial Developments
The São Paulo-based company has been developing hydrogen technologies since 2015 and is considering installing the unit in the southern municipality.
According to CEO Guilherme Fontana, the project advanced quickly after initial contacts with the city hall and municipal secretariats, accelerating initial negotiations.

At the moment, the proposal is undergoing validation with the Government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, a step considered mandatory before the final confirmation of the installation.
This evaluation phase is seen as decisive by the company, which is awaiting institutional green light to advance on the industrial timeline.
Expected Investment and Production Capacity
The first phase of the project anticipates an investment of R$ 110 million, with the potential to double the value in subsequent expansion cycles.
More than 60% of this amount will be directed towards the purchase of international equipment, which is already in the contracting process by the company.
The future plant will have the capacity to produce 4,000 tons of green ammonia per year, a strategic input for environmentally friendly fertilizers.
According to the company, the modular model uses solar energy, water, and air as the main inputs for the production process.
This technological combination allows for a reduction of up to 90% in carbon emissions compared to conventional methods currently employed.
Jobs and Workforce Training
During the construction of the factory, the expectation is to generate over 80 direct job vacancies related to civil works.
In the industrial operation phase, the unit could employ up to 60 qualified workers in technical and administrative positions.
Fontes Verdes states that it intends to prioritize professionals from the region, integrating public programs aimed at local technical training.
According to the company, this strategy seeks to align industrial development with productive inclusion and strengthening of the regional economy.
Strategic Impact for the Municipality
The municipal secretary Vitor Magalhães believes the project reinforces the local strategy for economic decarbonization.
For the secretary, the initiative positions Rio Grande as an emerging reference in low-carbon economy in the southern part of the country.
The city hall is working with the expectation of officially announcing the installation in the second half of January.
This announcement will depend on the completion of the formal evaluation stages, institutional approval, and final alignment between the company and the public authorities.
