The BYD Song Plus, one of the most important SUVs from the Chinese manufacturer, may be saying goodbye to the domestic market. According to the site CarNewsChina, the model that helped to consolidate the brand globally is expected to be gradually replaced by the Sealion 06, the new SUV that already occupies the same market range in BYD’s portfolio.

Since its launch, the Song Plus has sold over 1.57 million units, a number that places it among the most successful vehicles from the manufacturer. Despite rumors about the end of production, BYD claims that the model remains in line, and that the transition is part of a “natural product renewal,” common within the brand’s evolution cycle.

Transition and Brand Positioning

Rumors about the end of production have circulated strongly in recent weeks, leading BYD to officially address the situation. In a statement, the company denied the immediate end of the SUV and reinforced that the replacement by the Sealion 06 will be gradual.

The manufacturer described the move as part of a modernization of the lineup, which aims to align all products with the new global design and technology strategy. The idea is for the Sealion 06 to take over the role of mid-sized SUV within the Ocean family, while the Song Plus concludes its cycle within the Dynasty family.

A Model That Marked BYD’s History

Introduced in 2021, the Song Plus represented a turning point for the brand. It was the model that helped to popularize the DM-i plug-in hybrid technology and solidified BYD’s presence among the leaders in the electrification market.

Even after four years, the SUV continues to perform impressively: in August 2025, 13,098 units were sold just in China. Abroad, where it is marketed under the name Sealion 6, the model also accumulates 166,699 units exported between January and August this year, reinforcing its role in the manufacturer’s exports.

The Song Plus was the turning point that showed the world BYD’s technological potential, combining energy efficiency, performance, and strong commercial acceptance. Its legacy paved the way for a new generation of more modern and connected vehicles.

Sealion 06: The Successor of the New Generation

Officially introduced in July 2025, the Sealion 06 was developed to take the place of the Song Plus within BYD’s global strategy. The SUV features slightly larger dimensions, a design aligned with the Ocean series design language, and a completely redesigned interior focused on comfort and technology.

The new range includes 100% electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (DM-i) versions. Prices in China range from 139,800 to 163,800 yuan — equivalent to R$ 104,000 to R$ 122,000. The hybrid version combines a 1.5 combustion engine with an electric motor and Blade batteries, known for their safety and durability.

In addition to the new mechanical base, the model received significant enhancements in connectivity and driver assistance. The DiLink OS multimedia system and semi-autonomous driving features reinforce the technological leap compared to its predecessor.

BYD’s Global Strategy

The replacement of the Song Plus by the Sealion 06 is not an isolated move. BYD has been reorganizing its portfolio into two major families: Dynasty, which includes models with names inspired by Chinese dynasties such as Qin, Tang, and Han; and Ocean, which represents the new generation of globally-focused vehicles.

This change aims to make the lineup simpler, more modern, and competitive, strengthening the brand’s international presence. BYD, which already leads electric and hybrid car sales worldwide, bets on products with more Westernized design and advanced technologies to expand its presence in Europe and Latin America.

There is no set date for the definitive end of Song Plus production, but it is natural that as the Sealion 06 gains market presence, the veteran SUV will lose prominence. For now, both models coexist in the market, serving different consumer profiles.
