CMA CGM invests US$ 3 billion in methanol and LNG-powered container ships, with capacities of 15.000 and 23.000 TEUs

The investment made by CMA CGM was ensured by a contract signed between China State Shipbuilding and provides for the construction of 16 container ships powered by methanol and LNG

A new record in the container ship industry! CMA CGM together with China State Shipbuilding Corporation, signed a $3 billion contract that foresees the construction of 16 container ships powered by methanol and LNG, according to the website Portos e Navios.

The contract signed between the two is considered the largest ever signed by China's shipping industry in financial terms, according to local media.

The contract made for the construction of ships, consists of 12 biofuel ships powered by methanol with a capacity of 15.000 TEUs and 4 ships powered by conventional fuel with double LNG, with a capacity of 23.000 TEUs.

Signed contract is the first ever made by ships weighing tons powered by methanol

The container ship contract signed between the companies is the first order ever made for ships powered by methanol, and the signed agreement is considered a record in the industry naval methanol on account of the investment destined to the construction of the contract methanol vessels.

About the companies

The company CMA CGM is the third largest carrier in the world in terms of capacity and supports, as well as its competitors, the use of methanol as a fuel.

Maersk, the second largest carrier in the world by capacity, has 16.000 TEU methanol-powered ships on order. Cosco, the fourth largest, ordered at last week four container ships of 16.000 TEUs, one of which will have methanol in a dual-fuel engine and three will be ready to use methanol.
