Start of The Contracting Process for Drill Ships May Boost Oil Activities in Northeastern Brazil
Petrobras has started the contracting process for the chartering of two drill ships intended for the Sergipe Deep Waters (SEAP) project, located in the Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, approximately 100 kilometers off the coast.
The initiative, announced by the oil company on Monday night (3), aims to increase the availability of national gas and open a new production frontier in the Northeast region.

Strategic Drill Ships for Oil Production and Storage
The FPSO units (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) are considered strategic for the Sergipe Deep Waters project.

Petrobrás may readjust gasoline prices if Congress approves tax cuts, and the scenario raises concerns about impacts on consumers’ wallets.
Each platform (SEAP I and SEAP II) will have the capacity to process up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day. The oil produced in the region is light, high quality, and has a higher commercial value, with API grades between 38 and 41. Together, the two units will have the potential to offer up to 18 million m3 of gas per day.
Potential of The Sergipe Deep Waters Project in Natural Gas Supply
According to Petrobras President Jean Paul Prates, the Sergipe Deep Waters project stands out due to its significant reserves, with the potential to boost the supply of natural gas in the country and reduce reliance on imports of this input.
The initiative will also bring a series of opportunities for the sector and for the states of Sergipe and Alagoas, with the possibility of new investments in the region.
Technological Innovations and Advances in Deep Water Production
The Sergipe Deep Waters project also marks a new technological milestone in the country, with the implementation of a deep-water production project above 2,500 meters (reaching up to 3,000 meters). This innovation incorporates cutting-edge technologies, which will enable exploration and production under extreme depth and pressure conditions.
In summary, Petrobras’ contracting of drill ships for the Sergipe Deep Waters project represents an important advancement in the exploration and production of oil and gas in the Northeast region of the country. With the implementation of FPSO units, a significant increase in the availability of national gas is expected, along with the creation of new investment and development opportunities for the states of Sergipe and Alagoas.
Finally, the project also highlights the continuous pursuit of technological innovations, with the exploration of resources in ultra-deep waters.
