China Unveils Microwave Weapon Capable of Neutralizing Enemy Drones, Hitting Targets Up to 3 km

China has positioned itself as a dominant force in the development of advanced military technologies, and the recent Airshow China, held in Zhuhai, was concrete proof of this. During the event, the country showcased an impressive range of innovations, including the FK-4000 weapon system, designed to intercept threats like light drones with high-power microwaves (HPM).

This display of technological power not only demonstrates China’s military ambitions but also highlights how these innovations may shape future conflicts.

FK-4000: A New Era in Air Defense

The FK-4000, developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), is a mobile air defense weapon capable of neutralizing small and lightweight drones with high-power microwaves. It utilizes a 26-foot-wide antenna array, designed to launch microwave pulses nearly 2 miles away, in fractions of a second.

Microwave weapons, such as the FK-4000, represent a significant advancement over traditional defense systems. In addition to being faster and more efficient, they can cover large areas and operate invisibly. These attributes make microwaves an ideal tool for countering modern threats, such as drone inspections.

Another highlight of the event was the HPM system from Norinco, which incorporates an integrated search and tracking radar. Additionally, the Thunder Low-Altitude Defense System, developed by CETC, takes advantage of microwaves to further expand China’s defense options.

Swarming Drones: A New Military Strategy

The airshow also brought to light CETC’s impressive swarm launch vehicle. This system can launch 48 fixed-wing drones in just four minutes, with each drone weighing up to 30 kg and having a range of up to 120 minutes. The ability to operate drones in swarms opens new strategic possibilities, such as overwhelming enemy defenses or conducting reconnaissance missions in hard-to-reach areas.

The coordinated use of mass drones not only multiplies tactical options but also presents a significant challenge for conventional defenses, which may be overwhelmed by the number of simultaneous targets.

The Aerospace Industry Beyond the Military Realm

CASC also took the opportunity to announce advancements in the aerospace sector that go beyond the military. Among the 70 agreements signed, totaling around US$ 8.3 billion, are projects such as weather satellites, communication systems, and rocket launch services. These efforts demonstrate China’s commitment to expanding its technological influence into civilian areas, consolidating its position as a global leader in the aerospace economy.

Fighters and Drones: The Vanguard of Military Technology

Another highlight of the show was the display of Chinese stealth fighters J-35A and J-20, alongside the Russian Su-57. For the first time, China also revealed the full capabilities of the Wing Loong-X drone, designed for anti-submarine missions. Equipped for multiple tasks, the Wing Loong-X exemplifies how unmanned technology is redefining modern warfare.
