The New Reserve Found in the Beibu Gulf Basin May Represent a Strategic Milestone for China, Expanding Its Fossil Fuel Sources

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced a new discovery of oil and gas in the Beibu Gulf, in the South China Sea. This news represents a breakthrough in the search for new energy sources.

New Oil and Gas Reserve: Drilling and Production

CNOOC reported that the oil and gas field was found in an area called Weizhou 10-5. The drilling reached a depth of 4,840 meters, in a location where the water is about 37 meters deep.

Tests conducted by the company indicate that the well could produce approximately 374,000 cubic meters of natural gas and about 800 barrels of oil per day.

The company explained that this discovery is an important step in exploring oil and gas reserves hidden beneath layers of ancient rocks on the seabed.

Importance of the Discovery

Xu Changgui, chief geologist of CNOOC, stated that this find increases the chances of discovering more oil and gas in similar areas. He said that studies conducted by the company will assist in exploring other fields along the coast of China.

The advancement in exploring buried Paleozoic granite hills reveals the vast prospects for exploration of buried hills in the Beibu Gulf Basin. It will also provide guidance for exploration in similar fields along the coast of China“, Xu explained.

The CEO of CNOOC, Zhou Xinhuai, highlighted that the company has made several similar discoveries in recent years. He stated that this strengthens the country’s energy supply and aids economic growth.

In recent years, the company has made significant and medium-sized discoveries of oil and gas in various types of buried hills along the coast of China, which further expanded the company’s oil and gas resource base. The discovery in the Beibu Gulf Basin will help stabilize the energy supply and continuously contribute to economic and social development“, Zhou said.

CNOOC is the largest producer of oil and gas in the South China Sea. With this new discovery, the company reinforces its position in the sector and can help ensure more energy for the country.

Exploration of New Fields

In recent years, CNOOC has been investing in research to better understand the rock formations of the Beibu Gulf. The goal is to find new oil and gas reserves and develop technologies for production.

This discovery adds to other achievements by the company. In February 2025, CNOOC began oil production at the Bozhong 26-6 Field, in Bohai Bay.

This field is considered the largest in the world of a specific type of rock. The confirmed reserve has over 200 million cubic meters of oil and gas.

Additionally, the company uses technology to capture carbon dioxide and reinject it underground. This helps extract more oil while reducing the emission of pollutants. During the operation period, the project is expected to bury about 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The Future of Energy Production

The discovery in the Beibu Gulf shows that CNOOC continues to expand its oil and gas reserves. The company is betting on new technologies and research to increase its production.

China seeks to reduce the need to import oil and gas from other countries. Finding new reserves helps ensure energy for the population and industry.

CNOOC continues to invest in new areas for oil and gas exploration at sea. With this discovery, the company reinforces its position as a leader in the energy sector and continues to expand its production.
