Chinese Exercises With Dozens Of Aircraft And Ships Around Taiwan Reignite Global Alert: Semiconductors, Trillion-Dollar Trade, And Global Technology At Risk.

China conducted the largest military exercise ever recorded around Taiwan, bringing together 71 aircraft, 24 warships, and live rocket fire in maneuvers that simulated a total blockade of the island. The operation took place in the Taiwan Strait, one of the planet’s most strategic commercial corridors, and raised tensions to unprecedented levels since the 1990s. The move was interpreted by international analysts as a clear demonstration of military capability and direct pressure on Taipei — with impacts that extend far beyond regional geopolitics. The Taiwan Ministry of Defense reported that 71 Chinese military aircraft and 24 Navy and Coast Guard vessels were operating around the island on Tuesday (December 30, 2025)

The immediate spark for the escalation was the announcement of a US$ 11 billion arms package, intended to strengthen Taiwanese defense. The Chinese response was not only diplomatic: it was operational, visible through satellites, radars, and international monitoring systems, making it clear that any potential conflict in the Strait would not be localized.

The Largest Military Exercise Ever Seen Around Taiwan

The maneuvers involved fighters, bombers, drones, surface ships, and Coast Guard vessels operating simultaneously across different zones around the island.

The exercises included simulations of maritime and aerial blockade, interdiction of trade routes, and coordinated attacks, something that experts classify as a realistic rehearsal for prolonged blockade.

The volume of resources employed is striking even by Asian standards. Never before had Taiwan recorded, in such a short time, the simultaneous presence of dozens of military aircraft and more than twenty vessels operating across multiple quadrants. For defense analysts, the message is clear: China not only claims Taiwan politically but also demonstrates the practical capacity to isolate it.

Why The Taiwan Strait Is Vital For The Planet

The Taiwan Strait accounts for about US$ 2.45 trillion in trade per year, serving as a logistical link between China, Japan, South Korea, and the entire Southeast Asia. Oil, gas, grains, industrial products, and electronic components cross the region daily.

Any prolonged interruption in this corridor would have an immediate impact on global prices, supply chains, and the pace of the global economy. A blockade, even partial, would raise transportation costs, marine insurance, and energy prices, affecting everything from food to consumer goods.

Taiwan And The Heart Of Global Technology

The most sensitive point, however, is technology. Taiwan accounts for about 60% of global semiconductor production, including most of the advanced chips used in mobile phones, cars, servers, data centers, and artificial intelligence. Companies like TSMC are considered critical infrastructure of the 21st century.

If the island experiences an effective blockade or logistical disruption, chip production could be severely affected. This would mean delays and halts in the manufacturing of smartphones, vehicles, medical equipment, defense systems, and AI solutions on a global scale. Practically speaking, a crisis in Taiwan has the potential to stall a significant portion of the planet’s digital economy.

The Strategic Calculation Behind The Chinese Demonstration

For Beijing, the exercise serves multiple objectives. Internally, it reinforces the image of strength and control. Externally, it tests the reactions of Taiwan’s allies, measures diplomatic responses, and signals that any attempt to alter the status quo will carry a high cost.

At the same time, China is avoiding, for now, crossing the line into direct conflict. The strategy seems to be to maintain constant pressure, increasing unpredictability and elevating perceived risk, without firing the first real shot in combat.

The World At A Turning Point

The episode made it clear that Taiwan is not just a regional issue, but a critical knot in the global economy and technology. Unlike previous crises, the potential impact today is immediate, measurable, and deeply connected to the daily lives of billions of people.

With supply chains increasingly dependent on advanced semiconductors and just-in-time logistics, the Taiwan Strait is solidifying its position as one of the planet’s most sensitive points. The largest military exercise ever conducted in the region was not just a show of force — it was a direct warning that, if something goes out of control, the whole world will feel the effects.
