Located in Buenos Aires, Avenida 9 de Julio is an urban landmark and symbol of the grandeur of the Argentine capital. See more details of the widest avenue in the world
Avenida 9 de Julio, located in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is officially the widest avenue in the world. At around 140 meters wide and with a total of 16 lanes, it still impresses locals and tourists alike. Its name refers to the date of Argentine independence, celebrated on July 9th.
The construction of the avenue began with a grand ambition. The Argentine capital, nicknamed ““Paris of South America”, wanted to reinforce this title with a monumental route.
The inspiration came from the Champs-Élysées in Paris, but the intention was to surpass the French model with a wider and more awesome.

The work took almost 50 years to complete. In 1980, it was officially completed and has held the world record ever since.
Urban challenges and social impact
Creating space for an avenue of this magnitude in the center of a large metropolis required drastic decisions.
Around 60 square meters of properties were demolished. In addition, thousands of residents had to be displaced. All this to pave the way for the first section of the avenue.
The scale of the project did not stop there. The road has been expanding over time and now includes four lanes dedicated to public transport, seven sidewalks for pedestrians and a central area. Crossing the entire road from one side to the other requires time and patience.
A crossing that defies the clock
A recent video posted to TikTok shows a user crossing the entire width of Avenida 9 de Julio. Even though he was walking faster than usual, it took him 4 minutes and 17 seconds to cross. This includes waiting times at traffic lights. In comparison, crossing a regular avenue takes an average of 25 seconds.
The title of widest avenue in the world is guaranteed by a technical detail. Avenida 9 de Julio incorporates Carlos Pellegrini Street, to the east, and Cerrito Street, to the west.
Together, they add up to six additional lanes. Without this junction, the width of the avenue would fall to 120 meters, below the officially registered 140 meters.
