An elderly man bought a Tesla Cybertruck, drove it just 109 km and decided he didn't want the car anymore, asking his son to sell it.

In a curious episode in the automobile market, an elderly couple from the United States bought a Tesla Cybertruck, drove it just 109 km and decided to sell it.

The Cybertruck, officially launched in 2024, is one of the most controversial models of the last decade. Its futuristic design and advanced technology have attracted thousands of buyers.

However, as this case shows, not everyone adapts easily to the innovative concept of the electric pickup truck.

What led to the quick sale?

The owners, both in their 70s, waited months to take delivery of the vehicle. When they finally got to test drive it, they quickly realized it didn’t live up to their expectations.

The couple's son explained in a sales ad that his parents found the Cybertruck “too big for comfort” and that the steer-by-wire was difficult to get used to.

Additionally, they acquired the top-of-the-line Cyberbeast version, which features three engines and an impressive 845 horsepower.

This model can accelerate from 0 to 97 mph in just 2,6 seconds and cover a quarter mile in 11 seconds.

For senior drivers looking for comfort and practicality, these features can be more frightening than exciting.

Who was the Cybertruck made for?

The Tesla Cybertruck is a vehicle that breaks away from conventional standards. Its angular design and stainless steel exterior turn heads wherever it goes.

Inside, it has a minimalist dashboard, a joystick-type steering wheel and an 18,5-inch touchscreen, as well as a 9,4-inch rear screen.

Another point that may have influenced the seniors' decision was the Full-Self Driving (FSD) system, which requires a subscription for full use.

While Tesla promises advanced autonomy, the need to adapt to the software can be a challenge for those not used to highly automated vehicles.

The impact on the resale market

With just 68 miles (approx. 109 km) on the clock, the Cybertruck has been listed for sale on Cars & Bids with no minimum reserve amount. This means that regardless of the highest bid, the vehicle will be sold at the end of the auction.

So far, the highest bid has reached $88.888, which is down from the original price of $99.990 for this version.

Additionally, the FSD functionality adds an extra $8.000 cost, which could make it even harder to recoup your investment.

This case highlights a common phenomenon in the luxury and advanced technology car market: rapid depreciation.

While the Cybertruck has generated a lot of hype, very specific vehicles can quickly lose value when initial demand wanes.
